The Pebbledash Walls tells two stories which run as two separate threads, the first tells the story of a man (Maurice) with dementia who has become fixated with looking for his missing son. The second thread tells the story of his son (Robert), following him as he grows up and finds out that his family has many secrets. Robert struggles to cope as the family secrets are revealed to him and his fragile life falls apart, he feels his only hope is to leave. While he is away, he is unaware that his father has suffered a stroke and now has severe dementia, spending each day looking for his son.
