The Rose on the Road by Ivan A. Tomicic

I think people fight when they are on a downhill road because they are losing balance and then they keep pushing each other. Nobody likes being pushed about. Am I right? she said. "What happens when people go up a hill?" I asked. "Yes, they fight also because they fight for who will reach the top first," she responded, as if she knew everything. She took my hand, and we kept walking towards the park exit. After a short silence, I felt like I needed to say something. "All people are on the same road. The difference is everybody walks using different steps." After WWII, destruction was all around for both the nation that initiated the war and the nations that were attacked. People were scared and hungry, living in poverty. Nevertheless, there is a force that is greater than war, and there are relationships that cannot be torn apart by conflict. And one day, after this tragic war, a child who did not know much about life would make one of the greatest discoveries of his life. Tomicic invites you to join him on this road in his past, reminding each of us that if we stop for a moment, if we take a deep breath and take in all the beauty that is around us, we too can discover the secret meaning of a rose and share in his amazement. In the midst of trials, in the darkest of days, you too may find "The Rose on the Road."
