Law in 1907 is slow coming to the barren Sand Hills near the now-forgotten town of Rackett in western Nebraska. Defying the odds, harsh weather and primitive lifestyle, Will Sutton has filed a claim and set out with his wife and two daughters to own his own section of U.S. Government land. Cattlemen have their own ideas about how the land should be used, and they aim to push the homesteaders out. In cahoots with villainous co-conspirators in town, the cattlemen plot to seize Sutton's claim. A local newspaper editor sees through the conspiracy and determines to bring justice to the region, even if it means jumping ahead of rule of law.
