When three friends realise that they are afflicted with six of the seven deadly sins, they conclude that the only thing they can do to help themselves is to go on a pilgrimage, so they decide to walk to Canterbury to visit the cathedral. Along the way, they encounter a wide variety of people and situations which range from the wise to the wonderful and the weird. They include a man who doesn't believe in atoms, another who does but insists that they are purely symbolic, a woman collecting numbers for a lottery she's already won, and a philosopher who's confused by oranges. It's up to the three of them to learn how to handle these (and each other), to learn what they can from each encounter, endure the deprivations of the open road, keep their dog out of trouble, and make sure that they don't spend so much money in pubs that they can't afford the train home again.
