Too Greedy to Live by Ad Long

Across Europe and America, the rich are getting very much richer, while the poor get poorer. The middle class (if they still have a job) have seen their wages stagnate and their assets shrink. People aren't happy. Many blame the politicians, and just as many blame the banks. This is a story for those people disillusioned by growing inequality... though the way the story unfolds will likely surprise them, and may not please them.

When three wealthy bankers drop dead on a luxury yacht, local detective Kate Carter is part of the team sent to investigate. They soon learn that this is just one small part of a global event, and dozens of other rich money men have died elsewhere in the exact same way: vomiting blood before quickly collapsing.

The CIA oversees an unprecedented investigation the world over, and Agent Calvin Nichols is assigned to work on Carter's case. At the same time, the media starts speculating about who or what might be behind the terrible crimes. A lot of people are angry at banks, and the perception that they went unpunished in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis. Indeed, while many people losts their homes in the mortgage crisis, the big banks were bailed out by governments, and some even paid bonuses to their top executives.

Angry bank customers, however, couldn't enact retribution on this scale. Even if there was a world-wide conspiracy, how could it have been kept secret? Perhaps a rogue state is behind the killings, media commentators speculate, or a terrorist organization looking to create economic chaos and destabilize Western Democracy.

Or perhaps a hideous new disease has somehow been shared between the victims? If that is true, how many people are already infected, and how many more are at risk? Detective Carter decides that's unlikely, and it's worth the risk to stay on the boat with the wives of the three victims, and other survivors. She earns their trust, and learns a bit more information that might help her investigation.

Carter also rejects other even more unlikely theories: around the world, as people turn to their gods for reassurance, some religious leaders declare that the End of Days has come, and the dead bankers are merely the first to be judged and found wanting.

The autopsy of one of the three victims from the boat turns up the first real hint as to what may have caused their deaths. Kate Carter is able to piece that information together with what else she's discovered to create the first big breakthrough in the case. As a result, the CIA Agent Nichols begins sharing information more generously with the policewoman as they follow up her leads together.

Then, as some progress is being made, a video is released claiming credit for the murders... and making a series of demands that must be met, or else many more people will die.
