He was born on 18th of September 1709. He was often referred to as Dr. Johnson. His contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, critic, biographer, editor, and lexicographer are unmatched. It is often said that Dr. Johnson was the most distinguished man of letters in English history. His most significant achievement is his "A Dictionary of the English Language" that was published in 1755. It took him nine years to complete that dictionary. It is said to be one of the greatest single achievements of scholarship. During the twilight years of his life he wrote a massive and highly influential book "Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets". He was also a highly gifted orator and often delivered long speeches whenever he was asked to speak on a subject. Several of his lines, thoughts, and statements have become very popular quotations.
