The Savek brothers from Chicago??s neighborhood, known as Czech-ago, are an unbeatable pair. Their storied success came at every level of organized basketball they played together. The younger Josef, a flashy scorer with a quick first step, has two offers for the 1993 season. Ferenc “Frank”, a gritty rebounder and defensive specialist, seizes his last chance at basketball glory by impersonating Josef, his Australia-bound brother, on a struggling Czech superliga team mid-way through the season. The Svet Lions, situated in the Czech Republic??s glass-making region, play in the smallest market in the 10-team league, but as Frank discovers, have the republic??s most loyal fans. However, they??ve never beaten championship-caliber teams since the league??s formation in the Soviet era. Team owner and micromanager Milos Koliar inserts his will about who plays and who doesn??t. Further compounding the situation, the team lives all together in players?? quarters on the second level of the town??s glass factory. The floor shakes.
Shantelina, who works in the glass factory??s secretary pool, wins Frank??s trust. Frank divulges his secret to only her: he??s an imposter playing as his brother. As the relationship with this Slovakian woman simmers, the dynamic tension and the sparks that fly between them can??t be deterred. The only trouble is Shantelina has a long-time boyfriend Wenceslas from Prague, who??s a successful businessman.
As Frank battles to make the team, then later for a more preeminent status with the team and in the league, the town??s newspaper reporter with well-developed investigative skills stays on the heels of this Czech-American new addition. Never stopping his relentless chase to put things together.
Frank and Jaroslav, a scrappy six-foot point guard from Plze?, play well together. Their forceful efforts lead a turnaround in the Svet??s fortunes. The other superliga teams furiously try to defeat the surging Svet Lions, but the magical combination of Frank and Jaroslav proves indomitable.
