Zak Anderegg never intended to be an author. After finding an abandoned puppy in a remote AZ slot canyon and receiving national publicity for the rescue, several of his close personal friends as well as hundreds of Riley's Facebook fans encouraged him to write about the event.

During the writing process an unexpected thing happened. While writing about the experience of finding and rescuing Riley, Zak found himself weaving in the story of his own personal childhood struggles of dealing with constant attacks from classmate bullies and threats from within his own family. When he found Riley it was almost as if Zak had found a kindred spirit with whom he could relate. Seeing Riley emaciated and clinging to life in the bottom of that canyon, Zak unknowingly also saw a shadow of his former self down there; a young and innocent life tormented and imprisoned by careless and selfish people who had made him their target. For Zak, the decision to rescue Riley from that canyon was never an option. He would do whatever it took to pull Riley out of there, and in doing so, help begin the journey of rescuing himself from the demons of his own past.
