Cards

The most popular tricks are card tricks. Take a pack of cards and perform a miracle. Some of the masters whoes work you will find here are Dai Vernon, Tony Slydini, Roberto Giobbi and many many more. A pack of cards with its 52 pasteboards allows a shear infinite number of combinations and variations of card tricks. A philosophical question to ask would be if there are a finite number of card tricks possible or an infinite number. Looking at the amount of published card tricks it appears to be for all practical purposes infinite. Nevertheless the classic themes remain extremely popular and effective. It is hard to top a good ambitious card routine, card warp, oil and water, card to wallet (or other impossible locations), or torn and resored card etc. But occasionally we are blessed with the grace of a genius who gives us the gift of a completely new trick, concept or principle.

Maurice Janssen

Card Stories by Maurice JanssenThere are plenty of card tricks that amaze and fool the people. Here is a nice deviation from the same old card trick scenario. It has minimal audience participation (other than to just watch and listen). You basically are telling a short story with a deck of cards. This concept is not new, by any means. Every performer should have a version of "their story" to tell that utilizes a deck of cards. The goal here is not to completely fool but to entertain them with a story.

I've included three variations on a similar theme, this should get your creative juices flowing to create you own card...

Toto

The Book of Thirty-One by TotoFrom the preface and introduction:
This book could be titled "The Game of Thirty-One Revisited" because of the various articles that have made an attempt to describe the game. Why then did I set out to write this? First, because I consider the game of thirty-one such a delightful diversion from the "norm" that I want to bring it to the attention of the magic fraternity, and second, because I have many ideas I would like to add.

At the Magic Castle, in Hollywood, the game was first shown to me by Dai Vernon in August of 1980. The "Professor" frequently showed me card puzzles that he had learned over...

Ralf (Fairmagic) Rudolph

Pocket Riser 3.0: Rise and Change by Ralf (Fairmagic) Rudolph

After the card rises it changes instantly.

Pocket Riser 1.0 and Pocket Riser 2.0 have been feature creations of Ralf. These are effects he is particularly known for. Version 3.0 goes another big step further by introducing a second totally visual climax. The card rises as in the earlier versions from a drawn packet of cards, and then suddenly changes. The change is so fast and comes totally unexpected.

There is some arts and crafts involved in making the gimmicked note pad, but it is more than worth the effect. Everything is explained and demonstrated in a detailed video. You will also receive print templates in...

Bob Farmer

Objet C'ard: tricks and ideas with the Bloom Card by Bob FarmerIn February of 1986, David Ben and I sponsored a lecture by Gaetan in Toronto. It turned out to be a fabulous evening of magic. Towards the end, Gaetan demonstrated a monte routine which used what he claimed was a new kind of trick card. There were about 150 people in the audience and as I was standing at the back of the hall I couldn't really see what was going on. I didn't pay attention.

When the Wright Brothers first took their new machine into the air, there was probably some guy tying his shoes who missed the whole thing. That would have been me. Luckily I got a second chance. Unlike the Wright...

Ritaprova Sen

Target by Ritaprova SenThe magician asks for a card to be selected and also takes out the joker. After the selection has been noted and signed he buries the card inside the deck and places the deck on the table. He riffles the inner edge with his thumb and suddenly flicks the face up joker into the deck. The face up joker is seen to stick out at a certain portion of the deck until the very last moment before it is pushed in flush with the deck and the deck is immediately spread to show that the joker landed right next to the selection. A work of true precision. And this can be repeated as many times as you wish. Almost...

Billy McComb & Ken de Courcy

Cabaret Card Divination by Billy McComb & Ken de CourcyThe Effect: The magician removes a pack of cards from its packet and hands it out for shuffling and cutting. He also gives a sealed envelope to another spectator for safe keeping. The shuffled deck is passed to someone else who is instructed to deal seven cards on to the hand of the person seated next to him. The performer reclaims the balance of the pack then asks the spectator to fan the seven cards he holds faces towards himself.

From the center of the floor, the magician says, "Sir, I think you are looking at a Queen of Spades. If I'm right, please remove it from the other cards and hold...

John Mendoza

John Mendoza Lecture: 1982 in United Kingdom by John MendozaOn August 2nd, 1982, Martin Breese organized a John Mendoza lecture, which was taped for later release as a video. But Martin being the busy publisher he was had so many other projects to work on that he never got around releasing this recording. We rescued the recording from two old Umatic tapes Martin gave to me. Since this was recorded in the early 80s do not expect a high definition video. But it is nevertheless a good recording of Mendoza's lecture. The video has some flaws here and there with stripes, ghost images, and an occasional blackout. The audio track has no noticeable blackouts or problems....

Devin Knight

Liar by Devin Knight

Challenge repeat lie detector test

This is one of the most amazing self-working tricks you will ever see. It is so ingenious that you will fool yourself when you first perform it. Many magicians say that they can't fool their wives. Rest assured, this effect is so amazing that it will blow your wife away with no feasible solution; not only her, but most of your magic buddies as well. Read every word carefully and then ponder how such a thing is possible. This is done with a borrowed deck under challenge conditions.

Borrow a deck or use your own. Have a spectator shuffle the deck and then...

Mark Lewis

The Annotated Royal Road to Card Magic by Mark LewisMy name is Mark Lewis. This is the book that changed my life. In fact I suspect it changed the life of a lot of other card magicians too. The Royal Road to Card Magic was first published in 1949 and 70 years later it is still considered the standard work in card magic. A terrific study plan which if you follow carefully (as I did) you cannot possibly fail to achieve proficiency as a card magician. You can start the book knowing nothing about card tricks but by the time you get to the end you will become an expert. Of course a lot of things have happened in card magic over the last 70 years since the book was first published...

Lewis Ganson

Peter Kane's Wild Card Plus by Lewis Ganson

The original eye-popping effect plus great new routines by William G. Stickland and Bob Gill.

A version of this stunning effect first appeared in print in Hugard's Monthly Magic Magazine dated April 1962. The effect and method of the 'Wild Card' originated by Peter Kane, and described on his behalf by Gus Southall, has become a classic.

Top flight magicians all over the world acclaimed the effect. However, many magicians "fought shy" of it feeling that it was difficult to do, or, sometimes having difficulty in obtaining sets of cards which had really strong contrasts to emphasize the astonishing change. Peter Kane's 'Wild Card...
