Alfred Carlton Gilbert got interested at age 12. Learned when Alexander Herrmann "showed me simple tricks" after a show. Pro performer. Held world's record in the pole vault 1908-09.
Pro dealer in New Haven 1908-16 when he joined John Petrie's Mysto Mfg. Co. as co-owner. Thence (after Petrie left) into general toy making as The A.C. Gilbert Co., 1916-1952 when retired. Famous for his Mysto Magic sets, Erector sets (which he invented), Gilbert Chemistry sets, and American Flyer trains.
Wrote Gilbert's Handkerchief Tricks (1920), Gilbert Knots & Splices and Rope-tying Tricks (1920), Gilbert Chemical Magic (1920), and Magnetic Fun (1920). Autobio is A.C. Gilbert & Marshall McClintock, The Man Who Lives in Paradise (1954; 374pp; facsimile repr 1997).
