ACAAN

The 'Any Card At Any Number' plot is one of the most fascinating plots in card magic. Sometimes it is referred to as 'The Berglas Effect', because David Berglas was the one who popularized it, and who is probably this effect's most skilled performer.

The basic effect goes like this. Have a spectator choose any number from 1-52 (the number of cards in a regular deck). Let's assume the spectator chooses 16. Then have him or her select any card. Say the spectator chooses the Three-of-Hearts. Now the spectator counts to the 16th card in the deck and finds the Three-of-Hearts there. Impossible! But that is the effect. How you can achieve this and similar effects you will learn from the products in this category.

Silent Running 3 by (Benny) Ben HarrisSilent Running 3 picks up where the second volume, Run Silent, Run Deep, left off: That is, it is brimming full of novel applications of both the CrossRoads and Silent Running principles. You need to be familiar with these procedures (as taught fully in the first two volumes of the trilogy).

Part One of this finale jumps in at the deep end with some stunning and clever contributions. Novel ideas including making an “X” appear on the back of any “thought-of card” (a card generated by having the spectator create a card in his head via the SR process) or applying the SR principle to gospel magic or Ten...

Ionic Force by (Benny) Ben HarrisA COMPELLING FORCING PROCEDURE & APPLICATIONS THEREOF

Ionic is a ranging force, applied with the fingers, in order to arrive at an apparently random (or unknown number). Such forces—performed on the fingers—have been used for decades. Karrel Fox and Max Maven are both famous for their applications of the approach. For the record, Ray Hyman is credited with FIRST applying the idea to the use of the fingers. (See The Linking Ring, October, 1953). Ray’s application was for a book test called “It’s In The Book.”

Here’s how it usually works: Imagine asking a spectator to hold...

C.I.A: Challenging and Intensive ACAAN by Abhinav BothraA really clean and impeccable ACAAN.

What the audience sees and hears:

The Performer brings out a deck of cards and points to a person asking him to think of any card but not the Ace (as its common for people to go for it) and another person to think of a number between 1 and 48. He then proceeds to pull out the Aces meanwhile handing out small packets of cards to 4 different audience members and asks them to shuffle the cards thoroughly. While they are busy shuffling, the two audience members are asked to name their thought of card and the number for the first time.

Once the shuffling...

DYAD by Abhinav BothraA deceiving card control + an intrepid card move = An audacious card at any number

AMBIENCE CONTROL : A single card control from the middle of the deck to the top. Originally put out in The Blind Faith Collection (2015). It can also be used as a phase in an Ambitious Card Routine.

SAY STOP : A Selected Card At Any Number where you don't really need to know the number before hand. Originally put out in Audacious (2013) and as a bonus in C.I.A (2015).

Notes and Credits: Do not confuse Ambience Control to be same as Bizau Christian's Blind Square. They both are different. Say Stop was inspired from Paul Wilson's Yamfacaan. However...

Simple Sleightless ACAAN 2.0 by Abhinav BothraOne of the simplest methods to perform the holy grail of card magic - Any Card At Any Number (ACAAN) with a regular pack of playing cards without any sleights.

This is what happens: You introduce 3 cards with 3 simple questions:

  • Q1. Name a number
  • Q2. Name a suit
  • Q3. Name a value
That get answered alternatively by the participant and the performer. You unbox the deck of cards and demonstrate to the participant to deal down the cards to their number, the participant does the same and it is his/her named card at the named number.

Features:

  • no forces
  • no pre-show
  • no dual reality ...

The Empirical ACAAN by Abhinav BothraLove it or hate it but most of the numerous versions of ACAAN out there end up in the same ball park -- look what I can do or I manipulated your choices without your knowledge or simply as a coincidence. The Empirical ACAAN drifts from all of that, here is an ACAAN that makes people connect to each other. An ACAAN that is not about you but about the audience with virtually no sleight involved.

What’s great is that 70% of the times you'll have a hands-off / clean ACAAN and for the rest 30% you have to do something logical which is covered by the presentation to make it look like a hands-off...

Caantastic by Abhinav BothraFor decades magicians are on a quest to perform Any Card At Any Number from a borrowed and shuffled deck; which isn't always possible so they often settle for Card At Any Number.

The problem is that Card At Any Number when presented as a one-time feat can be mistaken as a co-incidence or the skill of the performer which takes away the feeling of it being pure magic. Caantastic counters just that by creating a mother of all co-incidences moment for the audience. Card At Any Number not just once or twice but thrice and when it happens the third time it dilutes any skepticism and evokes the...

The Fortuitous ACAAN by Abhinav Bothra

A virtually self-working ACAAN with plenty of audience involvement.

We all know whenever the audience tries to reverse engineer or recreate a trick and fail at it; they conclude with a common statement - He must have done something sneaky.

The Fortuitous ACAAN works to counter just that. It brings wonder out of the hands of the performer at the same time ensures that the control always rests with him. Here is how it goes:

A deck gets shuffled by 4 people while 3 other people decide on the Number, Value and Suit. The shuffled deck gets collected and the cards get dealt face-up and the...

Audacious ACAAN by Abhinav Bothra

An ACAAN for stage and parlor performers.

In short: The performer asks 3 participants to name a suit, a number and a value. Next invites one of the participants to deal down the cards. And like it should be, the named card lies at the named number.

Here are the details:

1. The performer asks an audience member (1st participant) to name a suit. The participant does so.

2. Next, the performer moves towards the 2nd participant to name a number (value) between 1 and 10 he unboxes the deck. But then he suddenly remembers that he needs to give out a notepad and pen to record the choices...

ACAAN by Brian KennedyThis is a straight forward ACAAN that is very easy to do - one could say it is more or less a move-less method. You ask the spectator to name any card (no force, completely free choice). Then you ask them to cut a portion of the cards off the deck and count the cards. This is the free selection for a number. Again there is no force of any kind. The spectator can cut as little or as many cards as she wishes. Nevertheless, the card the spectator has chosen earlier ends up at the same number.

[Note: The method is deceptively simple. It will probably not fool most magicians, but it will fool the vast majority of laypeople. The advantage of this method is that it requires no preparation and no forcing of any kind.]

Convergence by Cameron FrancisAn incredibly direct Card At Number effect!

"Convergence is the best card to number I have ever seen. Its so easy to do yet so deceptive. Great job, Cameron." - Bob Tucker

"Love it! It totally lives up to the description on your site." - Tim Eden

Cameron Francis brings you an amazing card at number effect that plays huge and is extremely practical.

Effect:

The magician proposes an experiment in fate as he introduces two decks of cards; one red and one blue. The blue deck is placed in front of a spectator and the magician never touches it again. The red deck is removed from its...

Four by Daniel MadisonCounteract
A shuffled deck of cards is cut in half. The performer and participant each select a half and shuffle. The performer tells the participant a number between 1 and 26 and invites them to count to that card in their half. The participant is invited to do the same; to name a number for the performer to count to. This is repeated until both the performer and participant have three cards each. One by one the cards are turned over to reveal three perfect matching pairs.

Blinded
The performer and participant each have a different colored deck. Each deal four cards face down randomly from...

The Advocate: the ultimate playing card index by Daniel MadisonThe best and most practical card index ever created.

The Advocate is by far Daniel's most favorite discovery and deceptive tool and was for many years his best kept secret, and it has been a monster of a reputation maker for him. This is his 4th edition of this book; where the predecessors were written with the magician and the effects in mind, this edition keeps due focus on the device itself for deceptive use. Although 'tricks' have not been removed from this edition they have been simplified and reduced to suggestions as opposed to focal points of the book. Much deserved extra attention...

Compendia by Daniel YoungThis is a compilation of The Mixed Mind, The Sharp Mind and The Thinking Mind, plus the unreleased The Cerebral Mind (includes three effects for Cerebro, although the routines can be performed without the gimmick, it's only there as an enhancer. Definitely something for the seance worker).

The Thinking Mind
This is all theory, which means half of you won't be interested. No tricks. It's about believability, logic, structure and so on. Well worth a read for the aspiring mentalist, or anyone who might be interested in Daniel's thoughts on the subject of mentalism.

The Sharp Mind

Polaroid Memories by Daniel YoungThis is a very flexible pseudo memorized deck routine resulting from the combination of "Memoria" and "Snapshot".
  • Memoria: This is what it looks like to the audience: Someone shuffles the pack; you let them peek at one card and shuffle it again. The deck is then spread face up on the table. You engage in the memorization process, and after a few moments you claim that you've memorized the whole deck. You gather up the cards and turn them face up, and then you ask them to name their card. You straightaway say that's twenty-three cards down. They count down to twenty-three and deal that card...

Route 1 by Dave ForrestAny card at any number.

At the beginning of your card set you display a blue backed deck and place it into your pocket for later. You then remove a red deck and blow everyone away with all your hottest stuff. Just before you end you suggest an experiment, a long shot if you will. Something that, should it work will guarantee many a sleepless night. You ask a spectator to just think of any card. Then you ask them to just think of any number between 1 and 52. The choices are written on the back of a Joker and left in plain view for all to see. You propose that you will, through shuffling and...

ACAAN Again by Dave ForrestDave just can't leave this plot alone. Here, on this 12 minute video download you'll learn perhaps his boldest method to date. A regular deck is thoroughly examined and shuffled by a spectator. A freely chosen number between 1 and 52 is written on a business card. A freely chosen card is written on a second business card. Both of these are locked inside the card case. The performer takes the deck and deals until the number is reached. Sure enough, the chosen card is found at the freely chosen number. The best news? There is a very cool gimmick in play which makes this whole thing practically...

The Holy Dixie Cup by David DevlinA deck is borrowed. It is thoroughly shuffled by a spectator. The performer has any spectator think of any number between one and fifty-two, but not to reveal it to anyone until asked by the performer. Nothing is written down. The number is simply thought of. The performer now has a different spectator name any card. There is no force of any kind! After a very funny gag, the performer for the first time asks the spectator to reveal the number that he has merely been thinking of. Let us assume that the number is twenty three. Without any fumbling or manipulation of the deck, no cuts, no shuffles,...
