E. Brian MacCarthy

(Britain: 19th October 1910 - 16th October 1968)

Accomplished amateur sleight-of-hand since his debut at age 11. By profession a soldier (captain in the Royal Engineers retiring as a Lieutenant-Colonel) in the British Army. Passionate about his garden and greenhouse, winning many prizes at local and national horticultural exhibitions.

Wrote Slow Sleights (1934; 20pp; repr 1946), Modern Sleights (1946; 20pp), The Chameleon Cups and Balls (36pp), Impromptu (1939, 87pp), and Sleights Supreme (1947, 92pp). Tricks in Magic Wand.

This is a book of impromptu effects. The word "impromptu" has been taken to mean that no apparatus nor fakes need be carried; the performer relies on obtaining one or two objects which either he will probably be carrying on his person, such as coins; or will most certainly be instantly available wherever he may be; such as cards. Simple preparation, as for instance tearing a slit in a borrowed envelope, is allowable, but no more. It is obvious that the word "impromptu" cannot mean "requiring no practice".
