Jonathan H. Green

(1813 - 1887)

Jonathan Harrington Green was born in Ohio and became a skilled card gambler who traveled the country. In 1842 he stopped his card advantage play and became a crusader against illegal gambling. He successfully lobbied for enacting anti-gambling laws in several states. From 1850 - 51 he was the general executive agent of the New York Association for the Suppression of Gambling during which time he conducted an exhaustive investigation on illegal gambling operations in New York City. He joined the Union army during the Civil War and became a captain. He was later employed by the US Secret Service. He also was an amateur inventor with more than 20 patents to his name. He retired in Philadelphia.
