The Gil-Gan Swindle by Lewis Ganson

What a lovely, simple, but hugely effective coin routine this is. Although an Okito Box is used, none of the regular Okito Box moves are employed .... there are virtually NO SLEIGHTS involved in this effect! Lewis also gives credit to BOB SWADLING for his subtle idea which is incorporated and which makes the effect possible .... and what an effect! A close-up masterpiece!

A small piece of plastic the size of a playing-card is shown and placed across the mouth of a tumbler. A 2p piece (or USA 5 cent piece) is placed on top of the plastic and covered by the lid of a small brass box. On tapping...

Three Card Monte as Entertainment Teach-In by Lewis Ganson

This was the publication that taught me the Three Card Monte many years ago. It has all you ever need on this wonderful performance piece - and then some.

Erdnase writes in Expert at the Card Table:

"There is not a single card feat in the whole calendar that will give as good returns for the amount of practice required, or that will mystify as greatly, or cause as much amusement, or bear as much repetition as this little game!

Vernon performed it reciting:

"A little game from Hanky Poo, the black for me, the red for you - all you have to do is to keep your eyes on the little lady - ten gets you twenty - twenty...

Matching the Cards Teach-In by Lewis Ganson

When Lewis Ganson asked Dai Vernon what he considered to be the best card effect, he replied that in his opinion "Matching The Cards" would be difficult to beat, particularly when performed for lay audiences. His opinion is shared by many of the world's leading card experts, who have often featured one version or another in their acts.

The granddaddy of this effect can be found in Magician's Tricks by Hatton and Plate. The effect of Vernon's version is as follows:

A card is selected by a spectator and placed face down on the table without the face being shown, then the performer endeavors to cut to the three other...

The Sympathetic Silks Teach-In by Lewis Ganson

Colorful, visual magic - certainly The Sympathetic Silks is a real classic of effects with silk. Performed by most of the old top-of-the-bill magicians on the variety stages around the world, it can be just as big a hit today as it was then. From a program dated 1926, we see that Houdini performed it in his full evening show - he often declared that this was his favorite trick. Chris Charlton opened his show with it; Cecil Lyle featured it; Jane Thurston performed it beautifully in her spot in the Thurston Show and it was certainly a masterpiece in the hands of Horace Goldin.

This was part of the...

Two in the Hand and One in the Pocket Teach-In by Lewis Ganson

Routines using the extra object principle.

Three small objects are shown, two are placed into the left hand and the third one into a pocket. On opening the left hand, not two but THREE objects are seen. This is repeated a few times, the effect becoming more bewildering as the routine proceeds. In some versions, the objects eventually vanish or are transformed into something different.

From this basic theme, a whole range of tricks has been evolved, the objects employed being almost anything of such a size that can be concealed in the hands.

This was part of the famous Ganson Teach-In...

Routined Manipulation Part 1 by Lewis Ganson

This in combination with Routined Manipulation Part Two and Routined Manipulation Finale is one of the best magic books ever published. Each routine is clearly explained mostly with photos and some illustrations. Many classic effects are described in detail. And the essay "Presentation of Manipulation" is a must read for any magician. It includes presentation, dress and appearance, care of the hands, make up, stage setting, music, personality, lighting, a.s.o.

Paul Fleming wrote:

Readers of Expert Manipulation of Playing Cards (an outstanding treatise, published a few years ago, on back-palming, fan-production, card-fanning, and other types of "showy" conjuring...

Routined Manipulation Part 2 by Lewis Ganson

This is the second part of the masterfully written classic work on magic. Together with Routined Manipulation Part One and Routined Manipulation Finale it is an excellent work on sleight-of-hand magic. The effects taught are suitable from stage and parlor to intimate settings of close-up magic.

This volume has a large section on billiard ball manipulation. Barrows Mussey calls it 'the best thing in print on the subject'. And Al Koran's Blindfold Card Act is a beauty on its own.

Paul Fleming wrote:

This book is a sequel to Mr. Ganson's Routined Manipulation (examined in our Review No. 153), and, like its predecessor, covers a wider range of conjuring than one might expect to find...

Ron MacMillan's Symphony of the Spheres by Lewis Ganson

At the Annual Convention of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (British Ring) at Scarborough in 1957, an unknown magician walked away with the First Prize - The British Ring Shield. The manipulative act which caused so much enthusiastic comment featured Billiard Balls, and even well posted magicians in the audience were at a loss to know from where several of the balls were produced. Here was something new in manipulative magic, and there was much speculation as to the means whereby balls could be "stolen" so cleanly, without a hint being given of their original secret location, or...

The Ganson Story Volume 1 by Lewis Ganson
"In all the world of magic, I don't think you could find a fairer, squarer person than Lewis" - Dai Vernon, Genii December 1974.

"As I look at the literary scene of magic today, the name of one man stands out above all the rest and the owner of that name is my old friend Lew Ganson." - Peter Warlock, Genii, December 1974.

Martin Breese writes in the original description of these tapes:

I made this recording because I wanted to meet magic's most respected writer. From an early age I followed Lewis Ganson's highly practical series in the Gen magazine and one by one I purchased every book that Lewis wrote including the Routined Manipulation series...

Originally published by Harry Stanley in three separate parts (1955, 1956, 1958) this ebook is a complete remake of all three parts in one volume with new photos taken by Martin Breese and posed by Paul Gordon. The card magic presented is exceptional. It also explains all the basic moves Cy used to perform the tricks described. The Art of Close-Up Magic Volume 1 by Lewis Ganson

Probably the greatest collection of close-up tricks ever assembled. And no card tricks are included in this first volume. It is so important not only because of its size (see the humongous table of contents below) and quality, but because the author has gone beyond the mere explanations of tricks and routines. The opening chapter, 'The Presentation of Close-Up Magic', embraces the whole approach to close-up performance. Includes hundreds of illustrations by Dennis Patten.

Rink's Rope and Ring Penetrations by Lewis Ganson

This profusely illustrated booklet. with 66 nice clear drawings, teaches you a complete and seemingly impossible rope and ring routine from Rink. The name of Rink of Holland is tied to many wonderful tricks and routines.

This Ganson description is, as always, a masterpiece and tells all you need to know to fool your audience with a simple piece of rope (with a little preparation) and a ring.

From the introduction

This series of penetrations was built up over a long period of time. The main theme is the linking and unlinking of a solid ring onto a piece of rope, the ends of which have...
