Effect:

A deck of cards is removed from its case and shuffled. The magician spreads the deck face up and asks a spectator to touch any card. All of the cards are different and this is truly a free choice. The Indian Cups and Balls trick is as old as Indian Magic itself. It is angle proof and traditionally performed seated on the ground cross-legged surrounded by spectators.

The cups vary according to class status. The wealthy Indian conjurer uses gleaming brass cups. The middle class conjurer uses cups made up of wood. The poor conjurer uses the cups made up of coconut shells. They make a hole on the top of a coconut half-shell and through it they will stuff rolled cotton clothes to serve as knobs to hold the cups.

To the spectator this effect looks no different to a tarot reading. The tarot cards are not handled in a tell-tale 'card trick' manner. To the spectator, there is no possible way that you, the reader, could know what card they chose. Yet you can discuss the impressions you get from the deck - what the tarot is telling you - and ultimately reveal their card. How you reveal their card is up to you. Are you reading their mind, seeing images of their card in their thoughts or is the tarot deck itself is drawing you towards their card? Perhaps there is a perfectly rational psychological explanation...

It is said that this book influenced Father Wenceslao Ciuró (and probably started his serious interest in magic). This is a Spanish 19th century magic manual describing mostly effects based on clever mechanical, chemical, optical, acoustic and physical principles. It also contains earlier versions of card and coin tricks based upon simple sleight of hand and mathematical principles.

Surprisingly little has been published in an encyclopedic form about the classic rising cards in English. You can find some in Greater Magic but the rest is spread out in many books and journals.
