Primer is a trick deck that has existed in Daniel Madison's repertoire for almost a decade. At first glance one may judge the deck as a 'beginners prop' but after using it I can say that this is a most powerful tool when performing. It achieves things, which in fairness can be achieved with a normal (modified) deck, but what's amazing about it is that it eliminates the sleights that at some point some of us could do without.

Primer Reader - Card Selection Process

Coffee & Smokes
The performer introduces two red-back cards from his pocket and places them face down on the surface. He then tells a tale of association and how he always associates these two cards with coffee and cigarettes as these very cards where used in a trick shown to him by a good friend over coffee and cigarettes. The said friend is explained to be no longer living. The spectator is given a blue-back deck and invited to deal any two cards from the deck without looking at them. The spectator is then invited to turn over the red-back cards...one of which...the 2 of Diamonds is seen...

In the spring of 2005 Jay Sankey sent out a world-wide request for audition videos featuring original material from unknown magicians. In response, performers from more than a dozen countries submitted more than 200 tapes and dvds! From this mountain of submissions Jay and his team unanimously selected Joe Diamond, Eric Leclerc and Jeff Stone.

A few months later, Jay, Joe, Eric and Jeff met up in Toronto and over a couple of days taped an outstanding collection of close-up magic and mentalism including 20 effects with matchbooks, coins, playing cards, keys, film canisters, wrist watches, chewing gum,...

The Effect: The magi removes his house key from his key chain and entrusts the spectator with the remainder of his keys. The magus then promptly causes the house key to vanish and reappear on the key ring in the spectator's hand. Sleeves up, no holding out, completely clean vanish. Watch the Demo. This was another big hit of Jeff's on Underground Jam. The particular vanish (a Richard Ross idea) used for the key is the big killer that really inspired a lot of magicians. You don't want to miss this one!

The Story: ... Can't ... breathe ... feeling ... pain ... must ... survive ... The biggest mistake ever made in the land of Bicycle was the day that the Heart family sent the Jacks after the Joker. They thought he was dead, but they should have checked; after all he is a Joker. The Effect: The magi weaves a story of smuggling Pesos across the Mexican border. Then demonstrates by placing a signed Peso in one hand and an empty (just examined) film canister in the other hand. The spectators hold onto the hand with the peso to keep it from escaping ... yet the other hand (no where near the peso hand) shakes the Film Canister ... silence ... silence ... then suddenly you HEAR the coin appear in the canister. No Gaffs or Duplicates. This is a reworked version of "The Case in Hand" that appeared in Duffie's Card Compulsions. You tell a story of a stranger and a gang of four in an unpleasant neighborhood. The gang needs to defend their turf but the stranger with the help of two body guards finds a clever place to hide.

Stanley Collins on Steroids! No Gaffs or Duplicates. If you dispense with the "marked cards" climax, you can do this with any deck. But the marked cards ending is too strong to lose!

Being a huge fan of the classic 'rising card' effect, Dave asked himself the following question: "Is it possible to cause a freely selected and signed card to rise from the centre of a regular deck of cards that is locked inside the card case?"

The answer is YES! The answer is AIR!

Any card is freely selected from the deck. The card is signed before being lost back into the pack. The pack is placed into the box and you focus your attention on the top of the cased deck. Slowly and eerily, a card is seen to rise from the center for well over half its length. That card is the signed card....
