Wesley James
I'll Have a Double by Wesley James

Wesley James has done it again! While no single volume could include every multiple lift technique that has been shared in magic's vast literature, anyone that performs card magic needs the powerful tool multiple lifts can offer. Simply stated, this is the single most extensive work on multiple lifts ever created. No list could be fully comprehensive, but you'll find an abundance of techniques referenced in the exhaustive bibliography. You'll also discover as much multiple lift information as has ever been placed between two covers, and more.

Wilbur Kattner
The Prolix Spirit Writes by Wilbur Kattner

Audiences and critics alike love this mysterious psychic entertainment stunt. A reputation-maker. Like all good mentalism, it has a simple premise. A female spectator secretly writes a question about her future. Another spectator examines a blank piece of paper, then initials and holds it for safekeeping. The lady now reads her written question aloud and the performer (that's you) calls upon the spirits to reply. The blank, initialed paper is opened by the spectator holding it, who discovers that it's no longer blank. He reads the lengthy reply the spirits have written in answer to the lady...

Conjurers Chronicle by Wilford Hutchinson

This house organ ran from May 1919 until February 1940. Each issue had 8 pages and was mostly filled with ads for items Hutchinson retailed. However most issues also included a trick contribution or effect (see below for the list of contents). The most interesting contribution is Graham Adams' Card Work, a series of his favorite effects, moves and in particular his take and fondness of Erdnase.

Wilfrid Jonson
Mr. Smith's Guide to Sleight of Hand by Wilfrid Jonson

This guide is written in an unusual style, a conversational style, where each lesson starts with "Dear Mr. Smith", like a letter to a fictional student. This feature makes it a very readable and valuable course. In the introduction Jonson writes:

The guide is presented to the reader in the form of a course of personal instruction and the majority of the sleights and tricks are described according to the manner in which I have myself performed them. A number of individual touches and personal inventions have been introduced which I consider to be improvements on previously published methods....

There is quite some confusion about this book, because there are American editions and British editions, some only with card magic, others with additional chapters on cups and balls and other non-card magic effects. The book we have reproduced was printed in London and it does include non-card items. We are reproducing the complete table of contents below.

This book was edited by W. H. Cremer as noted in the preface of Hanky Panky.

Wiljalba Frikell
Magicians Own Book by Wiljalba Frikell

The authorship of this book is not entirely clear, but Frikell is a likely author of at least good parts of the book. However, most likely it is a compilation of material from different sources with potentially a number of editors and compilers. Some of the other names associated with this book are H.L. Williams, George Arnold, Frank Cahill, and John Wyman, Jr. The book covers not only magic tricks of various kinds, but also a lot of what we would call today "kitchen table top experiments" in fields ranging from mechanical and chemical to optical, math and others. It also features a section...

Magic no Mystery by Wiljalba Frikell

Conjuring tricks with cards balls, and dice; magic writing, performing animals, etc.

This is a surprisingly interesting book edited by W. H. Cremer. It includes an early precursor of the Chop Cup. (See The Magic Dutch Balls.) It has interesting information on gambling, cheating, and scams. The chapter on 'Magic Writing' is a wonderful history of cryptography and steganography. The chapter on animal training is one of the most detailed I have encountered. It also includes a wealth of magic tricks, science experiments, and effects based on apparatus.
