This is an interesting compilation of material - a mix of short portraits and Goldston's personal recollections of various magicians - some famous, some not, as well as some of their tricks and secrets. The result is a fairly extensive collection of tricks of all kinds and denominations. Includes many illustrations and photos of the contributors.

The first edition was issued in the same style as Goldston's famous Locked Books series, but without the clasp.

Shaw was a dealer in Chicago during the time of Erdnase, who specialized in manufacturing trick apparatus, illusions, and gimmicks. Most of the effects described in this work are apparatus type of magic. There is also a sizable section on Chapeaugraphy.

What an excellent book. The quality of the material is outstanding. What makes this book particularly rare is a chapter on juggling and how to fake great juggle skills. I have yet to see another book on magic with such an extensive chapter on juggling. You will also find the obligatory chapter on shadowgraphy, a good write up of black art, and large sections on cards, coins, and tricks with many other props. You will find billiard ball manipulation as well as stage tricks with large apparatus.

The performer shows the back of a playing card. Suddenly the card has transformed into a foam heart. This is based on a black art principle and thus requires a black background. Arts and crafts are necessary to construct the gimmick.

The construction of the gimmick requires some arts and crafts. The method produces a sound that you need to be able to mask with music or some other way. Also, you will have to watch your angles.
