ACAAN

The 'Any Card At Any Number' plot is one of the most fascinating plots in card magic. Sometimes it is referred to as 'The Berglas Effect', because David Berglas was the one who popularized it, and who is probably this effect's most skilled performer.

The basic effect goes like this. Have a spectator choose any number from 1-52 (the number of cards in a regular deck). Let's assume the spectator chooses 16. Then have him or her select any card. Say the spectator chooses the Three-of-Hearts. Now the spectator counts to the 16th card in the deck and finds the Three-of-Hearts there. Impossible! But that is the effect. How you can achieve this and similar effects you will learn from the products in this category.

Natural Scam by Vittorio VersaillesNatural Scam, by Vittorio Versailles, is an ACAAN effect based on Tommaso (Tommy) Guglielmi's famous Subtle Scam.

Natural Scam represents a significant change to the workings of its predecessor, and will be of great interest to all those interested in the ACAAN plot.

What the new changes do best is they allow you to perform this ACAAN routine in a way that is so completely natural that members of your audience will think they just witnessed a miracle.

Natural Scam is completely impromptu, totally hands off, requires no prior set-up, and it is 100% natural.

Is this the holy grail? You will have to find out for yourself! ...

Propless ACAAN Volume 2 by Unknown MentalistThe methods and presentation are new and different from those given in Propless ACAAN (Vol 1). Again, this is absolutely propless ACAAN. No deck. No props at all. And this is an almost self-working propless ACAAN. Just you the performer and the participant on a voice call. That's it.

The effect from the participant's view: The performer and participant send some thoughts back and forth silently between them about a number and a playing card. Eyes of Darkness by Tommaso GuglielmiThis is an ACAAN effect using two decks.

The performer shows two decks closed within their boxes. A spectator selects one of them and puts it aside (This deck will be used later). The perfomer asks the spectator to remove the second deck from his box and to check if the deck is a regular deck. At this point the performer instructs the spectator to select a number and a playing card using a very clean procedure with this deck. The spectator for example chooses 31 and Ace of Spades. TOCATON by Nick ConticelloWhat is TOCATON?

TOCATON, the word, is an acronym for "thought-of card at thought-of number." It's pronounced "talk-a-ton." The word was coined by Nick Conticello to describe his new approach to the classic David Berglas effect "Any Card at Any Number." Nick feels the word is more descriptive of his effects because he does limit the choice of numbers and the choice of cards. But his approach has the virtues of speed of presentation and lack of preparation. Like most of his published work, TOCATON can be performed impromptu, with any reasonably complete pack of cards.

TOCATON, the e-book, contains four...

Ian Baxter

Simple ACAAN by Ian Baxter

Five approaches to the popular 'Any Card At Any Number' problem that rely more on subtlety than sleight of hand. As the title implies, the approaches are uncomplicated and well within reach of the beginner in card magic. One of Baxter's most popular titles.

From the Preface:

The evergreen Any Card At Any Number equation continues to attract new and novel approaches from card experts of all levels.

This modest manuscript unleashes five techniques of my own devising, each the result of reading Ken Krenzel's inspiring book Relaxed Impossibilities. With a careful text by Stephen Minch, the chapters...

Gerard Zitta

A Can of Mysteries 2 by Gerard Zitta"ACAAN with a mental shake"

Gerard likes the ACAAN plot. Whether it is impromptu or formal, closeup or on stage, it always has a strong impact. There have been loads of methods since Mr. Berglas presented this effect in the mid 70's. For this manuscript, Gerard wanted a 100% hands off solution, direct, practical, with NO sleight of hands and doable on stage or closeup and, if possible without knowing the card nor the number. The result is not a card trick but more of a mentalism effect.

EFFECT:

The performer places a boxed deck of cards in full view. He won't touch it again. Four presentations...

Gerard Zitta

Simplest ACAAN by Gerard ZittaAlthough it does not meet all the criteria of a 'perfect ACAAN', this method still has many advantages:
  • 100% impromptu and examinable
  • deck is normal - it can be borrowed and shuffled by the participant
  • ideal for close up and table hopping
  • Very direct
  • Very practical in live performance
  • Strong impact on the audience
  • Very simple to perform (from beginner to advanced but requires sleight-of-hand)
  • Can be done with different sleights for the card control and for the counting. This allows you to repeat the effect.
Drawbacks:
  • it is actually an 'Any Selected Card At Any Number', or what...

Gerard Zitta

ACAAN'Z by Gerard ZittaTons of ideas in this manual...A compendium of effects, principles and methods related somehow to the "Any card at any number" plot, commonly called ACAAN. Even though they are not all 'perfect' ACAAN's, they are interesting, entertaining or original variants from an audience point of view.
  • Some are original, some are based on combinations of old principles, with some 'twists' or new ideas.
  • Most are card tricks, some are not.
  • Some are impromptu or even improvised, some need some preparation.
  • Some are hands off, some need some (easy) sleight of hand.
  • Some are direct, some are more convoluted. ...

CANOE: Card at Any Name or Expression by Gerard ZittaThis effect is a variant of the Card at Any Number plot, but with a full routine and a very commercial and entertaining presentation, with gags, a prediction, or divination, with a puzzling final surprise revelation, and more potential. It can be adapted for any events like Christmas, New Year, Thanksgiving, Halloween, weddings, carnival, birthdays, conventions, etc.

It needs a one-time preparation that you can keep in your wallet or jacket, and can be used as an opener or a closer, for strolling, close up, parlor or stage.

Don Theo III

Broken by Don Theo IIIBroken
This is the launching point of the journey. Don fuses the essence of powerful theatre with mystery entertainment to open your eyes and ears to a new way to approach your performances.

"Most mentalists know Don Theo knocked it out of the ballpark with his introductory book Teardrop. However, Theo's 'Broken' makes his first treatise now seem like a bunt. 'Broken' is a beautiful, artistic work that forces the actor in each mentalist to rise to the surface and make some very necessary waves within our art." - Mick Ayres

Devin Knight

Insight: another clever ACAAN by Devin Knight[This effect previously appeared in the Mindvention 2009 lecture notes. If you have these notes you don't need to buy this.

You invite two spectators to help in this experiment. You remove a deck of cards casually show them face up while you remove the joker. They are placed face down on the table. You ask one of the spectators to cut off a block and look at a card. Not to remove it, just THINK of it. You really don't know what card the person is thinking about! The selection is made in the spectator's hands. The magician isn't touching the cards. The person doesn't write the card down, he merely thinks of it.

The deck is then picked up by you and mixed...

Devin Knight

Dumbfounded by Devin KnightAn amazing coincidence that goes beyond ACAAN.

Effect: The performer shows a blue deck of cards and shuffles it until he feels psychically inclined to stop. He really does not know the order of the cards. The deck is returned to its case and given to a participant to hold. The performer never touches the blue deck again. A red deck is now shown and shuffled by the performer. He has a second participant freely select a card from the red deck. The participant may change his mind, as there is no force. Next, a number is obtained by chance. No mathematics are involved and there is no force of...
