ACAAN

The 'Any Card At Any Number' plot is one of the most fascinating plots in card magic. Sometimes it is referred to as 'The Berglas Effect', because David Berglas was the one who popularized it, and who is probably this effect's most skilled performer.

The basic effect goes like this. Have a spectator choose any number from 1-52 (the number of cards in a regular deck). Let's assume the spectator chooses 16. Then have him or her select any card. Say the spectator chooses the Three-of-Hearts. Now the spectator counts to the 16th card in the deck and finds the Three-of-Hearts there. Impossible! But that is the effect. How you can achieve this and similar effects you will learn from the products in this category.

Dave Forrest

Route 1 by Dave ForrestAny card at any number.

At the beginning of your card set you display a blue backed deck and place it into your pocket for later. You then remove a red deck and blow everyone away with all your hottest stuff. Just before you end you suggest an experiment, a long shot if you will. Something that, should it work will guarantee many a sleepless night. You ask a spectator to just think of any card. Then you ask them to just think of any number between 1 and 52. The choices are written on the back of a Joker and left in plain view for all to see. You propose that you will, through shuffling and...

Abhinav Bothra

Self-Working CAAN by Abhinav Bothra

An effortless CAAN that the audience performs for themselves.

Features:

  • You never touch the deck of cards.
  • Can be done Close-up, Parlour or on Stage
A participant holds out the fingers of both their hands and drops down any number of fingers. The fingers left extended (say 2 and 1) forms the number (they get to choose 2 & 1 becomes 21 or 12) The participant opens up the pack of playing cards, deals the cards down (face up or face down doesn't matter). The card at their number matches the card you predicted (written on a paper before performance)

(Benny) Ben Harris

Silent Running 3 by (Benny) Ben HarrisSilent Running 3 picks up where the second volume, Run Silent, Run Deep, left off: That is, it is brimming full of novel applications of both the CrossRoads and Silent Running principles. You need to be familiar with these procedures (as taught fully in the first two volumes of the trilogy).

Part One of this finale jumps in at the deep end with some stunning and clever contributions. Novel ideas including making an “X” appear on the back of any “thought-of card” (a card generated by having the spectator create a card in his head via the SR process) or applying the SR principle to gospel magic or Ten...

The evergreen Any Card At Any Number equation continues to attract new and novel approaches from card experts of all levels.

This is what happens: You introduce 3 cards with 3 simple questions:

  • Q1. Name a number
  • Q2. Name a suit

Gerard Zitta

Simplest ACAAN by Gerard ZittaAlthough it does not meet all the criteria of a 'perfect ACAAN', this method still has many advantages:
  • 100% impromptu and examinable
  • deck is normal - it can be borrowed and shuffled by the participant
  • ideal for close up and table hopping
  • Very direct
  • Very practical in live performance
  • Strong impact on the audience
  • Very simple to perform (from beginner to advanced but requires sleight-of-hand)
  • Can be done with different sleights for the card control and for the counting. This allows you to repeat the effect.
Drawbacks:
  • it is actually an 'Any Selected Card At Any Number', or what...

The ACAAN Finale by Tommaso GuglielmiAfter many versions of ACAAN, Tommy has created a version which he believes is very direct, hands–off and very close to the perfect ACAAN. From the spectator's view point, they will see:
  • A deck of cards closed in its box is in full view on the table.
  • A spectator selects a card using an imaginary deck and a number via an imaginary urn.
  • Mentally the spectator imagines moving the card to the correct position inside the deck.
  • The spectator removes the cards from the box and counts to named number and the named card will be there without the magician ever touching the deck

This is his 4th edition of this book; where the predecessors were written with the magician and the effects in mind, this edition keeps due focus on the device itself for deceptive use. Although 'tricks' have not been removed from this edition they have been simplified and reduced to suggestions as opposed to focal points of the book. Much deserved extra attention...

The Catch-All Principle allows you to covertly position a free selection at a predetermined position in the deck. It does this with the help of two key cards. The real strength and novelty of this principle is that at crucial moments the spectator is free to cut the deck, which makes it seem impossible that the selection will end up at a predetermined position - but it does.

Perhaps the best use of this principle...

The Empirical ACAAN by Abhinav BothraLove it or hate it but most of the numerous versions of ACAAN out there end up in the same ball park -- look what I can do or I manipulated your choices without your knowledge or simply as a coincidence. The Fortuitous ACAAN by Abhinav Bothra

A virtually self-working ACAAN with plenty of audience involvement.

We all know whenever the audience tries to reverse engineer or recreate a trick and fail at it; they conclude with a common statement - He must have done something sneaky.

The Fortuitous ACAAN works to counter just that. It brings wonder out of the hands of the performer at the same time ensures that the control always rests with him. Here is how it goes:

A deck gets shuffled by 4 people while 3 other people decide on the Number, Value and Suit. The shuffled deck gets collected and the cards get dealt face-up and the...

The performer has any spectator think of any number between one and fifty-two, but not to reveal it to anyone until asked by the performer. Nothing is written down. The number is simply thought of. The performer now has a different spectator name any card. There is no force of any kind! After a very funny gag, the performer for the first time asks the spectator to reveal the number that he has merely been thinking of. Let us assume that the number is twenty three. Without any fumbling or manipulation of the deck, no cuts, no shuffles,...

Nick Conticello

TOCATON by Nick ConticelloWhat is TOCATON?

TOCATON, the word, is an acronym for "thought-of card at thought-of number." It's pronounced "talk-a-ton." The word was coined by Nick Conticello to describe his new approach to the classic David Berglas effect "Any Card at Any Number." Nick feels the word is more descriptive of his effects because he does limit the choice of numbers and the choice of cards. But his approach has the virtues of speed of presentation and lack of preparation. Like most of his published work, TOCATON can be performed impromptu, with any reasonably complete pack of cards.

TOCATON, the e-book, contains four...

At the stop of the spectator, he removes and tables the two selections.

David Jonathan

Wrong Turn by David JonathanWrong Turn is a fun and baffling approach to ACAAN that adds a kicker ending your spectators will never see coming. While most effects in this plot are telegraphed, this surprising twist strengthens the climax of the effect, further engaging your audience, while delivering even greater impact.

A deck of cards is displayed as the performer mentions he made a prediction in the deck. The spectator cuts to a card, remembers it, then returns it anywhere in the deck. The participant then thoroughly shuffles the cards so their selection is genuinely lost in the deck. Any number from 1 to 52 is...
