ACAAN

The 'Any Card At Any Number' plot is one of the most fascinating plots in card magic. Sometimes it is referred to as 'The Berglas Effect', because David Berglas was the one who popularized it, and who is probably this effect's most skilled performer.

The basic effect goes like this. Have a spectator choose any number from 1-52 (the number of cards in a regular deck). Let's assume the spectator chooses 16. Then have him or her select any card. Say the spectator chooses the Three-of-Hearts. Now the spectator counts to the 16th card in the deck and finds the Three-of-Hearts there. Impossible! But that is the effect. How you can achieve this and similar effects you will learn from the products in this category.

Daniel Young

Compendia by Daniel YoungThis is a compilation of The Mixed Mind, The Sharp Mind and The Thinking Mind, plus the unreleased The Cerebral Mind (includes three effects for Cerebro, although the routines can be performed without the gimmick, it's only there as an enhancer. Definitely something for the seance worker).

The Thinking Mind
This is all theory, which means half of you won't be interested. No tricks. It's about believability, logic, structure and so on. Well worth a read for the aspiring mentalist, or anyone who might be interested in Daniel's thoughts on the subject of mentalism.

Raphaël Czaja

Cut Cat Can by Raphaël Czaja

A self-working and examinable ACAAN effect with two decks.

EFFECT: The magician thoroughly shuffles a deck of cards. Then, the spectator cuts the deck to split it into two piles. Only now is he asked to create a random number in his mind. After a very quick and simple procedure, he writes his number down on a Post-it note - let's say, "13". He sticks it onto the card he cut to - let's say, the King of Diamonds. From a second deck - on the table from the start - he deals the cards one by one. Amazingly, the 13th card is the King of Diamonds!

Self-working. No gimmick. No extra card. Both...

Tommaso Guglielmi

Dark Thief and Entanglement by Tommaso GuglielmiDark Thief

Two spectators think of a number between 1 and 10. With their numbers, a card is mentally selected. With the first spectator, the magician performs a mind reading effect guessing his thought of card. With the two spectators together, the magician introduces a deck of playing cards and explains that he wants to try an ACAAN effect. In order to do this, the magician asks the first spectator to think of his card and to the second one to create a random number between 1 and 52. (This number is created using the two spectator's numbers: The second spectator tells his number to the first...

Raphaël Czaja

DIYCAAN by Raphaël CzajaFrom the creator of SCAMP, ACOCAVAN and 2D-ACAIN comes a fresh, original and effortless take on the Any Card At Any Number plot. It uses ordinary cards and can be performed hands-off (anyone can deal the cards at the end instead of the magician). Best of all, an impromptu version is also explained.

The magician introduces his performance by claiming: "The secret for this effect to be a success is for you to be both instinctive and lucky. I will guide you but just keep in mind that one card more or one card less will make all the difference."

The spectator cuts off the deck and silently counts his cards to...

Michael Daniels

Double Scam by Michael Daniels
"A lovely card effect. Highly recommended!" - Andrew Loh

"Double Scam by Mike Daniels is one of the best purchases I have made in the past year. Extremely clever and the ingenious methodology makes it simple to perform and will probably fool most magicians. But will absolutely destroy laymen. Worth every penny and then some. Diabolic!" - Doug Canning

Double Scam is a two-phase ACAAN effect (Any Card At Any Number). A full deck of cards is freely shuffled by the spectator. Both spectator and mentalist choose a two-digit number. Each then secretly selects and remembers a card. The two cards are lost in the...

Devin Knight

Dumbfounded by Devin KnightAn amazing coincidence that goes beyond ACAAN.

Effect: The performer shows a blue deck of cards and shuffles it until he feels psychically inclined to stop. He really does not know the order of the cards. The deck is returned to its case and given to a participant to hold. The performer never touches the blue deck again. A red deck is now shown and shuffled by the performer. He has a second participant freely select a card from the red deck. The participant may change his mind, as there is no force. Next, a number is obtained by chance. No mathematics are involved and there is no force of...

Tommaso Guglielmi

Eyes of Darkness by Tommaso GuglielmiThis is an ACAAN effect using two decks.

The performer shows two decks closed within their boxes. A spectator selects one of them and puts it aside (This deck will be used later). The perfomer asks the spectator to remove the second deck from his box and to check if the deck is a regular deck. At this point the performer instructs the spectator to select a number and a playing card using a very clean procedure with this deck. The spectator for example chooses 31 and Ace of Spades. Now, without the performer touching the decks, the second spector removes the first deck from its box and counts...

Devin Knight

Insight: another clever ACAAN by Devin Knight[This effect previously appeared in the Mindvention 2009 lecture notes. If you have these notes you don't need to buy this.

You invite two spectators to help in this experiment. You remove a deck of cards casually show them face up while you remove the joker. They are placed face down on the table. You ask one of the spectators to cut off a block and look at a card. Not to remove it, just THINK of it. You really don't know what card the person is thinking about! The selection is made in the spectator's hands. The magician isn't touching the cards. The person doesn't write the card down, he merely thinks of it.

The deck is then picked up by you and mixed...

(Benny) Ben Harris

Ionic Force by (Benny) Ben HarrisA COMPELLING FORCING PROCEDURE & APPLICATIONS THEREOF

Ionic is a ranging force, applied with the fingers, in order to arrive at an apparently random (or unknown number). Such forces—performed on the fingers—have been used for decades. Karrel Fox and Max Maven are both famous for their applications of the approach. For the record, Ray Hyman is credited with FIRST applying the idea to the use of the fingers. (See The Linking Ring, October, 1953). Ray’s application was for a book test called “It’s In The Book.”

Here’s how it usually works: Imagine asking a spectator to hold...
