Natural Scam, by Vittorio Versailles, is an ACAAN effect based on Tommaso (Tommy) Guglielmi's famous Subtle Scam.

Imagine:

The magician introduces a special deck of 52 cards, where each card is seen to have a number 1 through 52 printed on it. The spectators (two of them) are asked to verify that all the numbers are indeed different, that there aren't any duplicate numbers. The magician hands one spectator this special deck (in a face-down position) and says, "I want you to select a number 1 through 52. But instead of just thinking of a number 1 through 52, I want you to randomly select one. Like that, even you don't know what number you'd end up with, thereby eliminating any psychological influence....

The methods and presentation are new and different from those given in Propless ACAAN (Vol 1). Again, this is absolutely propless ACAAN. No deck. No props at all. And this is an almost self-working propless ACAAN. Just you the performer and the participant on a voice call. That's it.

The effect from the participant's view: The performer and participant send some thoughts back and forth silently between them about a number and a playing card. Two double blank business cards are used in this effect, with something written/printed on them of course, as you will get to know in this manuscript. This ACAAN is notoriously unknown as DAD ACAAN. Give a spectator the deck of cards with the promise that you will not be handling it again. The first spectator is asked to simply name a card and the second one to name a number between 1 and 52. The magician instructs the second spectator to deal to his named number. When the spectator reaches his number, the corresponding card matches the first spectator's named card.

This is an ACAAN effect using two decks.

The performer shows two decks closed within their boxes. A spectator selects one of them and puts it aside (This deck will be used later). The perfomer asks the spectator to remove the second deck from his box and to check if the deck is a regular deck. Two spectators think of a number between 1 and 10. With their numbers, a card is mentally selected. With the first spectator, the magician performs a mind reading effect guessing his thought of card. With the two spectators together, the magician introduces a deck of playing cards and explains that he wants to try an ACAAN effect. In order to do this, the magician asks the first spectator to think of his card and to the second one to create a random number between 1 and 52. Subliminal Influence is a multiple phase routine. You can decide to perfom all the phases in a row or just some of them as single effects. If you perform the entire routine exactly as Tommaso describes, it will take almost 20 minutes of your show. So, you decide.

The following effects take place:

• Guess a Random Selection: The performer guesses a random card selected by the spectator
• Gemini Effect part 1: The spectator and the performer select a card. The 2 cards are 2 cards with the same value and color: (AH - AD, 3S-3C, etc. )

After many versions of ACAAN, Tommy has created a version which he believes is very direct, hands–off and very close to the perfect ACAAN. From the spectator's view point, they will see:

• A deck of cards closed in its box is in full view on the table.
• A spectator selects a card using an imaginary deck and a number via an imaginary urn.
• Mentally the spectator imagines moving the card to the correct position inside the deck.
• The spectator removes the cards from the box and counts to named number and the named card will be there without the magician ever touching the deck

Two semi-automatic ACAANs.

In the main effect, the spectator mentally moves an imagined card into the deck in an imagined position only. All this happens without the mentalist touching the cards and without knowing which card and what number the spectator has thought of.

In the second ACAAN, the spectator generates a random card and number then counts to the generated position and will find the card. All this happens without the mentalist ever touching the cards.

The two effects are very easy to perform and do not require any sleight-of-hand.

Predestination - A deck is shuffled by the spectator, and a card is thought of. The participant deals cards until they find the one they thought of. You have predicted the exact position it was found in. No forces involved, and nothing is said out-loud by the participant. Oh, and you can perform this blindfolded.

After fanning the cards to show they are mixed the performer places the deck on a small table or hands it to someone to hold, at which point he never touches or even approaches the deck again. Next, the performer, in order to prove no stooges are being used picks up a box that is filled with paper balls and slings it in an arc over the entire audience asking everyone to catch or pick up a ball near them. Any Card At Any Number - You table a cased deck, then remove a small, thin note-pad from your shirt pocket and ask one person to name any card. Let's assume he says, "The Queen of Spades." You record this on the pad. You next ask a second person to name any number from 1 to 52. Let's assume this person says, "22". You record this too, then pick up the cased deck. You remove the cards and show that they are all different. You hand the deck to one of them, and ask that he deals down to the 22nd card... it's the Queen of Spades!

The effect is as folows: A member of the audience is asked to join you. A deck of cards is shown wrapped in elastic bands and placed inside the box. As he shuffles a deck of playing cards, the magician talks about how cards and numbers have been used for centuries to predict the future and how it translates into his art. EFFECT: The magician thoroughly shuffles a deck of cards. Then, the spectator cuts the deck to split it into two piles. Only now is he asked to create a random number in his mind. After a very quick and simple procedure, he writes his number down on a Post-it note - let's say, "13". He sticks it onto the card he cut to - let's say, the King of Diamonds. From a second deck - on the table from the start - he deals the cards one by one. Amazingly, the 13th card is the King of Diamonds!

What is TOCATON?

TOCATON, the word, is an acronym for "thought-of card at thought-of number." It's pronounced "talk-a-ton." The word was coined by Nick Conticello to describe his new approach to the classic David Berglas effect "Any Card at Any Number." Nick feels the word is more descriptive of his effects because he does limit the choice of numbers and the choice of cards.
