Self-Working

Self-working is not the best term but it is the one used most often to describe tricks which do not require any sleight-of-hand. The better description is be sleightless. Although these tricks are typically much easier to learn because they do not require any proficiency in moves, they still need practice in presentation, timing and spectator handling.

Sub Rosa 14 by Werner MillerThe highlight in this collection of sleight-less magic, is the Point Reflections principle, which is a new mathematical principle Werner Miller has introduced to magic. So far nobody has made use of it, except Miller. This ebook will likely change that. This principle opens new doors for new ideas, a fertile ground for trick creators. Miller's point reflection routines come with beautiful print templates. You can go from printing to performing in literally seconds. You will also get some bonus ideas by Chris Wasshuber.

Jack Carpenter

Steve Mayhew's Angels May Shuffle But The Devil Still Deals by Jack CarpenterSteve Mayhew has come up, with what must be the most clever application of the Gilbreath principle, or strictly speaking a principle closely related to Gilbreath's. He achieves with this idea extremely strong poker deal effects. If you are only remotely interested in poker deals, mathematical principles, or in particular the Gilbreath principle, you must read this ebook. This ebook is a reprint of his notes with the same title plus the effect "Freedom" from his lecture notes.

Raphaël Czaja

Spellbound by Raphaël CzajaEffect: Using a full deck of playing cards, a spectator cuts to one card that the magician asks him to remember. He selects a second card by secretly spelling the name of his thought-of card, dealing one card for each letter, and pockets it. In the first climax, the magician is able to divine the card that the spectator is thinking of. In the second climax, the pocketed card and a prediction (tabled from the beginning) are revealed: They are identical!

No gaff. No sleight. Basically self-working. This routine uses a regular deck and an ordinary odd-backed card only. Everything can be examined. ...

Aldo Colombini

Simply Impromp2 by Aldo ColombiniThis is Aldo's second volume of impromptu card tricks. Once again the rules that he required were simple: That the tricks be based on subtle moves and principles only rather than difficult sleights. Most importantly, the tricks had to be totally impromptu with no set-ups. Eventually he did, however, allow a few easy moves such as a card control, a force or a simple sleight; moves that still are very easy to master and perform.

Tricks are organized into the following categories. The last one is a section on simple sleights and procedures:

  • The Four Aces
  • Amazing Coincidences
  • Baffling Revelations ...

Stephen Tucker

Sherlock by Stephen Tucker
"I really enjoyed all of these routines! Very nice. The White House is especially cool!" - Cameron Francis.

"You have some very nice thinking in these variations." - Peter Duffie.

As one of Martin Breese's customers I recently received a newsletter from him that drew my attention to a routine of Peter Duffie's called IDEAL HOLMES. It's a really great self-working routine, and this is what happens...

A regular deck of cards is shuffled and then cut by someone a couple of times. You take back the cards and spread them between your hands and have one FREELY selected by someone. He places the card directly into...

  • BUBBLE SORT (Werner Miller): Three face cards capture two selected cards.

  • CHANGE IN MIND (Howard Adams): A great routine using cards torn in half and three coins.
