Hypnosis & NLP in Magic & Conjuring

Hypnosis (from the Greek hypnos, "sleep") is a trance-like state that resembles sleep but is induced by a person whose suggestions are readily accepted by the subject. In the early days it was called 'animal magnetism', and the father of hypnosis was the Viennese doctor Frederick Anton Mesmer, who in 1775 started to publicize it.
It is not true that via hypnosis you can force somebody to do something he does not want to do. But it is true that under hypnosis you can remember facts which you could not recall without hypnosis. NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming and is an interpersonal communication model and an alternative approach to psychotherapy based on the study of language, communication and personal change.

Devin Knight
The Uncanny Rising and Floating Iron Bar by Devin Knight

This effect was very popular in the early 1900s. It was used in vaudeville, tent shows, and touring illusion shows. However, today, it is almost forgotten.

This secret has been sold in the past by Nelson Enterprises, Nelmar, Joe Ovette and Del-Ardo and is now being revealed again to modern-day performers, who wish to add this novelty to their acts.

If you have seen Devin Knight perform, you may have seen him do this feat. It is a regular part of his show. This can be used by magicians, mentalists, and metaphysical performers; but, be warned, Even though there is a gimmick. This is not...

Calostro
Entertaining with Hypnotism by Calostro

From the foreword:

With few exceptions, the published data available on hypnotism is either too weighty with scientific theory, if a serious work, or it contains too much fakery, if stage hypnotic demonstrations are being described. It is this author's purpose to condense the latest and best methods and ideas into easy understandable language, so that the lay person may have before him an easy-to-follow, compact summary of the art.

  • Foreword
  • The Origin Of Hypnotism
  • What Is Hypnotism?
  • Who Can Be Hypnotized?
  • Who Can Become A Hypnotist?

25 Lessons in Hypnotism by unknown

Shades of the Manchurian Candidate...this book teaches how to put someone into a hypnotic trance by showing them a playing card.

This is a great starter book from the depression years with all kinds of diverse hypnotic information. There are even a few "politically incorrect" statements in the book. But, after all, it was the 1930s.

You will be taught ways to hypnotize yourself or a room full of people, how to hypnotize someone instantaneously, and even how to hypnotize animals. It also covers mesmerism, magnet healing and other closely related subjects.

George Miller Beard
The Involuntary Life by George Miller Beard

The 'involuntary life' would today be described as trance or as a hypnotic state. Beard writes:

Every human being lives two lives, the voluntary, in which he acts more or less under the control of the will, and the involuntary, in which he acts automatically, and over which the will has but a limited power, or none at all. The acts of both the body and the mind, may be involuntary as will as voluntary, and in both body and mind, the two lives are constantly blended.

However, he was a skeptic when it came to the popular practices and explanations of these phenomena by the means of animal...

George Miller Beard
A New Theory of Trance and its bearing on Human Testimony by George Miller Beard

Beard distinguished several varieties of trance:

Trance may, for the sake of convenience of description, be divided into four varieties: the spontaneous, the self-induced, the emotional, and the intellectual trance.
He goes on to describe how these various forms of trance can be entered and he explains that the emotions through which trance is most likely to be excited, are fear, reverence, wonder, and expectation. He rejects the notion that trance is created by some force or fluid the operator emits and rather explains it as the brain is only partially awake and active while the other...

Devin Knight
Instantaneous Hypnotic Test Revealed by Devin Knight

You don’t have to be a real hypnotist to do this effect! Any magician or mentalist can apparently hypnotize anyone 100% of the time, even hardened skeptics. The famous stage magician, John Calvert, used this effect regularly in his big touring magic show.

I touched upon this effect briefly in my Annotated Secret Professional Pseudo-Hypnotic Methods; however, I did not go into the amount of detail contained within this release. This is the most detailed information about this effect ever released. This secret was released by Del-Ardo, Joseph Ovette and Nelson Enterprises. I have taken the best information from all these releases and made them...

In fact, the subject's reactions to these tests are so positive that they are convinced that they were truly under hypnotic control. This is a reprint of the rare and hard to find Secret Professional Pseudo-Hypnotic Methods first released by G. W. Magnuson in 1931. The original manuscript was poorly typed and full of typos and grammatical errors. Devin Knight has taken this work and reset the type to make it easier to read, corrected the typos and grammar and added photos. In addition, Devin has annotated the text with badly needed updated information regarding these methods.

Interestingly, Magnuson did not believe there was such a thing as real hypnosis and developed an act of pseudo hypnosis. Some of his best effects...
