Rings in Magic & Conjuring

The "Chinese Linking Rings" is a beautiful classic similar in strength and standing to the "Cups and Balls". Many famous performers have shared their interpretations with the magic fraternity and have contributed to the progress in ring handling.

But the Linking Rings effect is not the only thing rings have to offer. There are wonderful routines with fingerrings and routines with one ring and a piece of rope or ribbon where the ring links and unlinks in surprising and magical ways from a rope or ribbon.

4x4 Rings: F.U.N. Ring Series by Ken Muller

A short routine using four metal rings based on unique methods and sleights from the Primal Rings ebook.

Learn Four Choice, Double Out, Twice Removed, Slack Switch all with reverse ring framing and Web Ring subtlety, but without the development logic. This module uses a standard 4-ring set of metal 4-6" rings with several recommended modifications.

A dangled chain of four metal rings is gathered into a fan display from which a single, spectator chosen ring is extracted. Then the other three rings are removed one-by-one, leading to a series of link-unlink demonstrations in the hands of a spectator. Finally,...

Big Ring on String by L. C. Collier

A parlor sized ring with a stage sized routine.

This is a compact ring and string routine which uses some of the most visual moves one can do with these props. For many years I have performed a very similar routine. I used a red cotton ribbon instead of the standard white rope, because a ribbon lies flat on the ring and is wider than a rope allowing for some sequences a stronger illusion.

Sam Dalal
Chinese Linking Rings by Sam Dalal

No one knows the originator of this mysterious effect. Linking Rings were introduced into Europe about a century ago by a troupe of Chinese Magicians, and have been named the "Chinese Linking Rings" ever since.

The basic effect is that a number of solid metal rings that have been examined by the audience magically link and un-link at the magicians' command. The rings are linked into chains and designs comprising of two to eight rings. The effect is capable of infinite variations, and the routine can be as short or long as you like. It can be performed silently to music, or with a patter...

Here alternative final phase sequences are also provided for “less than optimum” conditions. All rings are handed out with some m-powerment and links in spectator hands. It is with a great deal of pleasure that I write this foreword to my friend Hans Trixer's book on 'ring' magic, for in it the reader is presented with a number of most effective tricks, all of which are free from the suggestion of special apparatus. Every effect shows a naturalness of handling that comes from the mind of a natural magician.

Hans, through his many contributions to magazines is already well known to magicians in this and other countries. His penchant is for the smaller type of magic, and amongst the group in Holland which devotes much of its time to...

Jump-O-Ring by Mats G. Kjellstrom

Once upon a time I saw a magician do a routine with three ropes hanging from a stick. At the end of one rope there was a silk. He made the silk to magically jump between the ropes. This was amazing. I wanted to do this, but how? Then I invented this routine that's very impressive. Charles Bertram's old routine "Here, There and Everywhere" has the same effect but the method is very different, my method has the big advantage that you can let the spectator check the rope and knots out before the magic happens! Which makes this an impossible illusion. One nice aspect of Jump-O-Ring is that you can...

Alan Rorrison
Pulled by Alan Rorrison

The Linking Rings effect is a classic of magic and for good reason: a direct and simple method coupled with the visual aspect of the props have made this a strong hold in most magicians' working arsenals.

So what is wrong with the original that a new one needs to be brought forth? Well, here are a few small points to take into consideration:

  • The old rings are too big for any real world worker
  • They are too expensive in most cases
  • Large rings simply look like a magic prop
  • The routine rarely has any motivation
  • People simply get bored of the routine
Pulled solves all these points and...
