A classic effect from the early days of magic catalogs. An effect that every kid wanted to order so he could impress his friends. Ads for this trick appeared in early Boy's Life and in comic books. It's an effect that is still effective today but is almost forgotten.

This is Alan Rorrison's semi-sarcastic reply to the dreaded request: "Can you pull a rabbit out of a hat?" This question has plagued close-up magicians for decades. Suffer no more. This effect is the appropriate answer and will silence your pesky spectators.

The effect is lovely. Get a card selected and signed (a truly free selection - no force), draw a top hat on it and have rabbit appear in it. Then you use a rubber band as lasso to catch the rabbit.

The performer shows three cards: two jokers, and the queen of hearts. The queen of hearts is the money card. All the spectators have to do is follow the queen. No matter how hard they try, it just isn't possible. The queen is anywhere but where they think she is. Finally, in an effort to make it easier to follow, one of the jokers is set aside. You show the old gag where with two folding actions a dollar bill is turned on its head. You now have the spectator sign the bill and repeat the folding actions. However, now only the front of the bill is upside down, the back is not upside down. In other words, only one side of the bill turned. How is that possible? You give the dollar bill as souvenir to the spectator who can keep this impossible bill for the rest of his life in his wallet.

The magician shows a deck of cards and asks spectator 1 to cut a third of the deck and look at the card he cut to and then shuffle the packet. The magician looks away. Spectator 2 does the same with the rest of the deck: he cuts another third and looks at the card he is cutting and then shuffles his packet. Still, the magician looks away. Conditions are impossible. During the 1970's Dai Vernon demonstrated this around the Magic Castle to anyone who was interested. He was quite fond of it. It is a neat, highly deceptive, practical hole card switch using natural actions, something he highly favored.

This is a very visual effect. Magically transfer writing from a card to your hand. Have a card selected (not forced), have it signed on the face, and then make a mark on the back. Wave your hand over the card and suddenly the mark has vanished from the card. It has transferred to the palm of your hand. Hand out the signed card as a souvenir.

The gimmick is easy to make and only requires a bit of arts and crafts with the usual supply for card gaffing.

This can be done with a borrowed shuffled deck that does not have to be complete. (The only requirement is that the deck is in decent condition, but it does not have to be a new deck.) There is no stack or prior arrangement necessary. Somebody hands you a deck and you go right into the routine. You ask the spectator to take about a third from the deck, shuffle it at heart's content, then remember the bottom card and burry that pack somewhere in the middle of the remaining portion on the table. This all happens while you look away. You then take the deck behind your back and find the spectator...
