Wolfgang Riebe
Fred Outdone Squared by Wolfgang Riebe

Based on the old 'Fred' card trick, Wolfgang launched his magician fooling version 'Fred Outdone' in 1990, causing a sensation amongst magicians and adding a unique twist in that the whole deck could be shown as a red back deck, except for the Fred card. In 2017 Wolfgang took the trick to new heights, hence the new 'Fred Outdone Squared' title.

It's as simple as any spectator naming any card, e.g. seven of hearts. The entire deck is shown to be red backs with different names on the back of each card. Even another seven can be shown to have a red back and different name. When the seven of...

Ralf (Fairmagic) Rudolph
Framing the Queen by Ralf (Fairmagic) Rudolph

A playing card is shown from both sides. The spectator initials the face of this card. Performer tears out two small rectangles from the inside of the card. One of these rectangular tear-outs has its center removed to create a little frame, which is freely shown. Magician folds this little frame over the center beam of the larger card frame and suddenly the little frame clearly hangs from the center beam of the larger frame. How did it get on there? This card, with linked little frame, can be handed out or given away as souvenir.

The performance is easy and does not require any complicated...

Bertie Mac
Frac Stack by Bertie Mac

Frac Stack is a groundbreaking tetradistic stack, with fractal and mirror properties that make it easy to learn and hard to forget. Imagine amazing your audience with a regular deck of cards that appears well-mixed, while they never suspect the unbelievable truth. You know the sequence of the cards forwards and backwards. You know the position of every card from the top of the deck, and even the position of every card from the face. You can quickly determine the sum of the values of any group of cards. On top of all this, imagine being able to secretly rearrange the cards mid-performance so...

Ray Grismer
Foxiest by Ray Grismer

For many years, Ray has worked on the problem of developing an impromptu version of the Paul Fox Miracle Gimmick. After testing and discarding several earlier handlings, he has come up with a stunning version that is a reputation-building demonstration of mass mentalism.

It can be done anytime, anywhere, totally impromptu, with a borrowed deck of cards which is first thoroughly shuffled by a spectator. The cards are handed out to several spectators - between five and twenty if you wish - and they are each asked to just think of a card. The cards are gathered and once again shuffled. You...

Miku W.
Fourfold Indication ACAAN by Miku W.

A multi-phase ACAAN routine with a completely unexpected ending.

A very unusual selection-finding sequence: after a freely chosen card is returned to the deck, the performer claims to give the spectator four chances to locate it. The spectator cuts the deck into four piles, but none of the top cards are the selection. Just as it seems the magician has failed, the plot turns - each of the four cards not only indicates the exact position of the selection, but also reveals the mates of the chosen value. See the full routine in the performance video.

Walt Lees
Four Professional Card Tricks from the Repertoire of Walt Lees by Walt Lees

I consider this among the very best card books ever written - and I have read an awful lot of card books. You might ask why a rather thin work from the 1980s would qualify for that high praise? There are three very good reasons for it.

One, Walt Lees has selected four absolute gems of card magic. He could have added fifteen other ok routines to make it look a lot more, but he has refused to pad his work with mediocre material. Good for him. There is already enough mediocre material published. It makes it a lot easier for the reader. You do not have to look for the gems. They are already right...

Aldo Colombini
Four Play by Aldo Colombini

An incredible card routine with multiple climaxes. Four packets are cut by a spectator. The top card of each pile is taken and placed in front of each packet. You take three cards from a pile and these cards are the mates of the first selection. You repeat this with the other three packets. At the end the Aces appear on top of each packet. It uses a regular deck of cards.

Dustin Marks
Four Forces by Dustin Marks

Forcing a card is one of the strongest moves you can do. When the spectator handles the cards and the magician seemingly never touches the cards, you have a miracle waiting to happen. The reveal can be as extravagant as you want. All of these forces require no sleight of hand and are not well known. They can be done with the spectator's deck.

Satish B
Four Brides for Four Brothers by Satish B

This is a cheeky trick to perform when there is a request for "one more". The magician starts by telling a story. The spectator gets involved in the action and turns "matchmaker". This trick is free of any sleights. The spectator invariably cuts to the four queens in an impossible way.

The performer removes the four Kings openly and lays them face down next to each other. The deck is shuffled and a card is dealt face down in front of each King. The performer continues to deal cards into four piles. When the spectator stops him, the performer places the face up King on the pile stopped at...

Ken de Courcy
Four Ace Intros by Ken de Courcy

From the introduction:

The Four Ace Trick is deservedly popular. There are many versions, from the semi-automatic to the almost impossible finger-flinging variety, so it's within the scope of every performer. It starts, necessarily, with the abstraction of the four Aces. One can simply run through the pack, locate them and toss them out. Or, if you want considerably more impact, you can produce them magically. That's what this is all about ... producing the Aces in an interesting way as a lead-in to whatever Four Ace Trick you normally do. Here, you'll find both easy and more complicated...

Daniel Madison
Four by Daniel Madison

Counteract
A shuffled deck of cards is cut in half. The performer and participant each select a half and shuffle. The performer tells the participant a number between 1 and 26 and invites them to count to that card in their half. The participant is invited to do the same; to name a number for the performer to count to. This is repeated until both the performer and participant have three cards each. One by one the cards are turned over to reveal three perfect matching pairs.

Blinded
The performer and participant each have a different colored deck. Each deal four cards face down randomly from...

Devin Knight
Fortune Telling Card Trick by Devin Knight

After working a few card tricks, how many times have you been asked "Can you tell fortunes with cards?" Fortune telling with cards has always been interesting; but, how many of us have wanted to spend the time to learn and memorize the meanings of all the playing cards? I would dare say, very few of us. Besides, there is no trick to it.

Now you can say, "Yes." Not only that, but you can actually tell people how many brothers and sisters they have, how many children they have including their gender, number of pets and the month of their birthday, including their current age (without doing...

Randy Wakeman
Formula One Close-Up by Randy Wakeman

From the Foreword by Ed Marlo:

The effects have been constructed with the audience's conditions in mind. By this I mean that practically every close-up, at-the-table worker in a restaurant has to work under the audience's conditions and not the performer's. Thus, angly moves, risky sleights, lapping, etc. have been eliminated from Randy's lay audience routines. Therefore, you can be assured of the practicality of his magic.

As for my section of effects, it is obvious that much of it will not be used if one works under the spectator's conditions. Which also means that I work under my conditions....

Scott Creasey
Forces, Peeks, Stacks and Gaffs by Scott Creasey

Should a Mentalist use playing cards?

Good question and one which has been raging among Mentalists since Annemann was still going strong. In this book Scott has addressed that question and put together some of his favourite Mentalism card routines, covering effects with borrowed decks, stacked decks and gaffed decks.

You'll find no knuckle busting sleight of hand here; instead Scott has included some of his own routines taken straight from his professional mentalism repertoire, many of which no other magicians have seen until now. Some of the ideas are based on old effects given a new twist, but...

Stephen Tucker
Forbidden Fruit by Stephen Tucker

Five lovely small packet routines involving apples from Stephen Tucker, Per Clausen, and Shiv Duggal.

The last routine plays off the 'Apple' computer angle. With Apple Inc. having made such a meteoric rise, with many having Apple computers or phones, this routine would probably play even better today than it did during the 1980s. Some changes in the patter will be necessary, but the general idea has merit.

The booklet came originally with six custom cards showing apples and an apple core, some with blank backs, some with regular backs. These cards are not included with this download, but...
