Paper & Paper Money

Paper folding, paper tearing and tricks with paper money are at the heart of this section. I am fascinated by paper. I consider it one of the most important inventions. You might not see it that way, but paper is a hightech product. Paper machines are pretty much the largest and most complicated manufacturing installations in use by humankind. Paper comes in all shapes and sizes and is ideal for customization with a slogan for your next corporate gig or a personal message. Vanishing a dollar bill or changing it into a hundred dollar bill will always garner respect and admiration. It is human nature.

Paul Romhany

Almost Impossible Bill to Can by Paul RomhanyTen years ago Paul Romhany caused a stir in the magic fraternity when he performed his original Impossible Bill To Can routine on national television. He was accused of using stooges because the routine was that impossible. However what magicians did not know was that Paul had worked out a routine that did not use stooges. In 2007 Paul released the exact routine and version he used on the TV show on a DVD and is still available from most magic dealers.

This new version is an alternative Bill To Can routine which in many ways is more practical for most working conditions. This routine is...

Percy Abbott

Paper Magic by Percy AbbottIf you already have Bag-o-Trix you have this book. Although Percy Abbott put his name on the book, UF Grant said many of the ideas were his. This dispute later resulted in UF Grant leaving the Abbott company. There are over forty of the most unusual, unique and amazing new tricks that can be worked with paper. This is a new and untouched field. Paper tricks are easy to carry and are most effective. A few of the outstanding effects are:
  • The performer makes a paper fir tree - and then actually climbs it
  • A cabinet is made from paper - shown empty - and a girl crashes through it from apparently nowhere
  • A paper bag escape...

Peter Prevos

The Möbius Strip in Magic: A treatise on the Afghan Bands by Peter PrevosThe Möbius strip is one of the most enigmatic principles of mathematics. A simple loop of paper transforms in unexpected ways. This topological quandary has not only inspired mathematicians; countless inventions use this principle and artists have painted, sculpted and written stories about the Möbius strip.

The art of magic has extensively used this topological principle to create the illusion of magic. The Afghan Bands were a favourite magic trick in the first half of the last century. Famous magicians such as Harry Blackstone and Nelson Downs regularly performed it in the stage act.

Impossible Matters by R. ShaneThese are two very interesting self-working effects, both based on topological principles. You do not need to learn any math or remember a whole lot to perform these two stunning effects. (These two effects have been taken from Shane's books Automata and Pentalogy.)

Paradoxical Oddities
A packet of cards, the twenty cards making up a royal flush, is given to a spectator to shuffle. The spectator then chooses one of the values (say, for example, Jacks), and the cards mixed so that some are face up and some face down. The packet is further mixed by the spectator, eventually being divided into...

Ralf (Fairmagic) Rudolph

Impossi-Bill Braid-3+1 by Ralf (Fairmagic) RudolphYears ago Robert E. Neale came up with his method on how the make an impossible gift out of a borrowed banknote using three strips and a few folds. Now it's time to bring this idea to the next level by using four strips! This makes the braided bill look even more impossible then before!
  1. You could use almost any borrowed banknote or paper. (It does not work with Euros.)
  2. Totaly impromptu.
  3. No glue or hidden cuts. Make this impossible object right under the nose of the audience. Even if they look very close, they can't rebuild it.
Note: The folding technique of Robert E. Neale's version is totally different...
