On November 26th and 27th 2010 the first European Close-Up Magic Symposium, focusing purely on coin magic, brought 16 magicians from all over the world to Milan for two days of non-stop coin magic, with lectures and performances, private sessions and gala shows. Phones are now very personal items. Long time ago in order to perform an effect with pictures; you would have to carry the pictures with you. But now people carry pictures with them all the time. Million of pictures! Using your spectator's phone and his Instagram account the effect goes like this:

Your spectator freely selects any category of pictures. He searches for this category himself; then your spectator selects any picture he wants. This picture could have been uploaded by anybody in the whole world. Yet you read your spectator's mind and accurately find the username that uploaded that...

This is one of David's favorite effects. Not only does it fry laymen, but it also fools magicians as well. It can be performed at any point during your act. It does not have to be an opener or a closer, but it could be used as either. It is a very powerful effect because it seems very hands-off and is extremely visual. It is also easy to do!

Effect: Two red backed jokers are freely shown, and are set aside. A spectator selects a card from a blue backed deck, and signs it (the selection must be signed, or the effect is greatly diminished). In this example let's say that the card is the three...

A ten phase, powerhouse visual routine, done with just one ring. Each phase is modular leaving you the opportunity to do each phase, one phase or mix them up.

Damn Gum

Remove a piece of gum stuck to the bottom of your shoe. Simply change it into the inner wrap of the gum package; change it again into a full, store bought pack of gum. Take out a piece of gum, eat it or give the piece to your spectator.

S.C.T.B (Signed Coin Thru Bill)

Borrow a bill, borrow a coin. Have the spectator sign the coin. Fold the bill in half and place the coin inside the bill. Crimp the coin inside...

No slits! No thread! Take a borrowed Pad!

Borrow a paper pad (Post-it) and let the spectator sign the front page. After you draw the wrong card you add a few lines to make a box. Then the chosen card rises out of the drawn box. After that you rip of the signed paper and fold it (if you wish) and heat up with a lighter (you don't have to do this). When the spectator opens the paper, the card is gone. He could check the pad and keep all items as a souvenir! No threads, no slits! (like the first Version). If you follow the routine you end up clean. You can build the gimmick in a few minutes....

In the second volume of The Books of Wonder Tommy Wonder describes what he calls a Frozen Lock. This is a utility device for the Jack Miller holdout, but it can also be used for other holdouts and pulls. It allows one to keep the holdout higher up in the sleeve until you want to lower it. Lubor Fiedler's Gozinta Boxes is my all time favorite illusion. It has been so ever since I first saw it performed decades ago. I love the simplicity, clarity, and impossibility of the effect. Two boxes. One clearly larger than the other, because one fits into the other. But wait - now the larger one is smaller and the smaller one is larger. Every child can understand the impossibility of this. It transcends any language or cultural barrier. Since no explanation is necessary the magic first happens on a very deep visceral level. But then when the mind kicks in and tries to find an explanation...

Effect: Using a full deck of playing cards, a spectator cuts to one card that the magician asks him to remember. He selects a second card by secretly spelling the name of his thought-of card, dealing one card for each letter, and pockets it. In the first climax, the magician is able to divine the card that the spectator is thinking of. In the second climax, the pocketed card and a prediction (tabled from the beginning) are revealed: They are identical!

No gaff. No sleight. Basically self-working. This routine uses a regular deck and an ordinary odd-backed card only. Everything can be examined. ...

Effect:

The spectator selects a card from the performer’s deck and does not reveal it to the performer until requested to do so. The performer then shows a packet of four Jokers to the spectator, displaying the faces and backs of all four cards. He then asks the spectator to wave his selected card over the Jokers he is holding in his hand. When the performer turns the packet face up and displays the cards, they are no longer Jokers! Instead, all four cards are now identical to the spectator’s selected card!
