Paul LePaul

(Olney, Illinois: 2nd August 1900 - 8th June 1958)

Stage name of Paul Shields Braden since 1928. Inspired in 1917 seeing Nate Leipzig. Pro cardman (manipulation and tricks) since 1920, first in vaudeville, then hotels and nightclubs. Played the New York Palace twice in 1933.

Adviser on Hollywood movies Miracles for Sale (1939) and The Illusionist (c1939) and had a bit part in Eternally Yours (1939). In WW II toured with USO in Europe, Africa, and Japan. Voted one of the 10 living Card Stars in 1955. Toured Europe with USO in 1956. Retired by cancer in 1957, dying in St. Louis.

Invented Cards to Envelope. Pet effect: The LePaul Wallet (invented by Dick Washington).

Wrote The Card Magic of LePaul (1949, 230pp; repr 1959) and LePaul Presents the Card Magic of Bro. John Hamman [1958, 47pp]. His act was filmed by M-G-M as a short subject (c1939).
