This was Peter Duffie's first solo book published on the heels of his hugely successful Alternative Card Magic and Contemporary Card Magic.

It includes mostly card routines with a couple of coin routines sprinkled in for good measure. The effects are not difficult to do and can be classified as easy to intermediate at the most.

Peter Duffie is one of the world's most creative cardmen and Subtle Miracles gathers together some of his most inventive work. Auto Hue
Two spectators each select a card from a packet. The selection procedure happens in the hands of the spectators, you have no influence over the procedure. First, the cards separate into reds and blacks. Then the selections magically appear among the cards of opposite colour. All this happens without the performer touching the cards.

Not Wrong
You offer to demonstrate your ability to cut to certain cards with great accuracy. You give the deck a couple of cuts, placing a packet face down on the table. You turn over the top card of the tabled pile to reveal the Ace of Hearts. This...

You give the four Kings to a spectator. You cut the deck saying that you'll now cut to one of the Queens. The spectator's task is to try to pick the King that will be the perfect mate for the Queen you cut to. Remove the top card of the deck and the spectator picks ANY King. The two cards prove to be the King and Queen of Clubs! This is successfully repeated with the remaining Kings and Queens. Then a big surprise occurs: On the back of the four Queens four hearts appear!

Requires four double-backed cards and heart stickers.

Here are two effects that use easy-to-make gimmicks which can be added to your regular deck.

FLASHPOINT is a sensational card routine with a topological flavor. Two cards, an Ace and a King, magically change places. The performer offers to repeat the effect under more stringent conditions. The King is placed on the table and covered with the performer's wallet. The Ace is placed between two blank cards. The Ace is visible through two holes cut in the middle of the blank cards yet, at the performer's command, it instantly and visibly disappears. When the wallet is lifted from the table the...

In the book Inspirations (published by Martin Breese in 1987) I included an effect called 'Envelope Prediction'. POINT BLANK ASSEMBLY gives you the maximum effect for the minimum effort. Four Kings change places one at a time with four blank cards. The transposition is repeated only this time it occurs instantly. Finally the four Kings disappear altogether.

IMPULSE starts as a transposition effect between a selected card and a blank card but ends with a finish that those who have seen it describe as 'NOT POSSIBLE'. Truly original thinking.

All the effects use simple fakes or subtleties to accomplish off-beat effects.

INTERNECINE is a novel version of the Tunnel Change and uses a small packet of cards. The cards appear to change places of their own accord. The performer demonstrates this phenomena further by causing two of the cards to change places in a very convincing manner. Finally the transposition is repeated and this time the change takes place visibly.

CLEAR THOUGHT uses four blank cards. A spectator is asked to think of one of the four Queens, Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds or Spades, and whilst the blank cards are in her own hands one of them changes to the mentally selected card.
