Stuart Cumberland

(1857-1922)

Stuart Cumberland was a British muscle-reader who would perform blindfolded feats such as identifying a hidden object in a room that a person had picked out or asking someone to imagine a murder scene and then attempt to read the subject's thoughts and identify the victim and re-enact the crime.

Cumberland did not believe in spiritualism, did not claim to possess genuine psychic abilities, and explained all mediumship phenomena with muscle-reading or trickery. He had a dispute with the Society for Psychical Research who was searching for genuine cases of telepathy and other psychic phenomena.

A tale of modern black art. A thrilling story of love and mysticism.

In the Victorian age, spiritism and mysticism were big business. Therefore it is no surprise that a muscle reader like Stuart Cumberland tried to take advantage of it and wrote stories based on his experience as a 'thought reader'.

From the introduction:

I have visited many courts and travelled in many lands and have, from time to time, been brought in close contact with the world’s rulers and those who have made their mark in the world’s history. With a great number of them I have performed actual experiments, whilst others I have read without the direct application of any experiments at all.

Upon the correctness of my reading in connection...

Stuart Cumberland
That Other World by Stuart Cumberland

A witty memoir-like debunking of all things paranormal.

Stuart Cumberland describes the fascination of European kings and queens with the occult. He gives a detailed analysis of how Rasputin participated in the fall of the Romanovs. He thoroughly skewers the German government of Wilhelm II. He describes the fake spirit photography, the false claims of clairvoyants, how folks fall for physical manifestations of the spirits such as table rappings. Overall a fun read and expose of human gullibility.
