Supreme-Magic-Company

(1953 - 1993)

The Supreme Magic Co. was founded and owned by Edwin Hooper in Devon, England until 1987. In 1953, with a loan from his father and with encouragement from Jack Hughes and Percy Abbott, Hooper started the Supreme Magic Company. He partnered with Abbott's Magic Company and over the years built it into one of the largest magic dealerships in the world. It was exclusively a mail order business. Edwin Hooper discouraged customers from visiting, because he did not consider it a shop. Supreme was not merely a retailer, they published (ex. Magigram and Pentagram) and produced magic apparatus on a large scale.

Hooper asked the teenager Ian Adair to join him. The firm eventually employed about 100 people. Adair worked his way up to general assistant, then general manager, then partner. The two traveled the world dealing magic and lecturing.

In 1987, due to ill health, Hooper sold the company after 34 years of service to Brian Head and Paul Dupee.

Hypnotising Animals by Supreme-Magic-Company

Very little on this fascinating subject has been published before, but you will find some references in Oriental Conjuring and Magic by Will Ayling and also in the books of Stanton Carlisle.

Let us make it quite clear that it is not possible to place an animal under genuine hypnosis. What you do is to induce a sort of muscular paralysis which has no ill effects on the animal subjects used. You will learn to do this for a variety of animals, including hens, roosters, rabbits, ducks, and even reptiles and frogs.

Under Water Box Escape by Supreme-Magic-Company

One of the great publicity stunts. The box may be made by a local concern and placed on display for examination before being used. The magician is tied with a length of rope, placed in the box, and a committee is allowed to fasten the lid with either screws or nails. Nails may be driven into any part of the box. The box is lowered into the water and almost immediately magician is seen emerging from the water at some distance from the box. After he has been identified he sinks from view. The box is raised from the water, the lid removed, and out steps the magician.

The Living Head Illusion by Supreme-Magic-Company

The magician displays a medium-sized fancy box, saying that it is the home of a young lady who has no body. The box is placed on a slender type of table. The door of the box is opened, disclosing a head that is very much alive. A dialogue is carried on between the magician and the head etc. There does not seem to be any possibility of concealing the body anywhere, as the audience has an unobstructed view under the table at all times.

Simple workshop plans and instructions.

Fantastic Five by Supreme-Magic-Company

Five effects with simple objects.

All of the effects are easy to do . . . are varied in effect. None of them requires elaborate properties.

Effect No. 1. Invisible Dice. A clever novelty. A prediction with a box of matches and invisible dice. No matter what number a spectator "throws," you show your prediction to be correct. A trick that will become one of your favorite pocket tricks.

Effect No. 2. Fire! A gag - but an unusual one you can use in many ways. Any time you need a light, i.e. in the Dove Pan routine, Burnt and Restored note, etc., you say you will show the Magician's way of...

Stretching A Rope Plus by Supreme-Magic-Company

An approximately 3 ft. length of rope is shown and pulled between the hands, it's a solid length of rope, - it is not made of elastic, it doesn't stretch and yet suddenly it begins to get longer and longer ... 5ft., 8ft., 10 ft., - yes, it stretches and stretches until it is 30 feet or longer.

A wonderful eye-popping effect that forms a perfect preface to other rope mysteries. In Milbourne Christopher's original effect no special gimmicks are used, just a rope and the special method of preparation and handling.

THE PLUS: In addition to all this, an alternative handling is given which allows the effect...

Connoisseurs' Coins Through by Supreme-Magic-Company

Connoisseurs' Coins Through ... a definitive routine, one of the finest ever for the coins through table. The work of Vernon, Slydini and a host of others combined to give the easiest handling with the maximum effect. In this routine several coins pass repeatedly through the table. You begin with six coins. Three of the coins pass through the table top two times. Then you eliminate two coins and repeat the penetration through the table with four coins. Again, you eliminate two coins and repeat the trick with two coins. At the end you eliminate another coin and repeat the penetration a last...

Panama Plus by Supreme-Magic-Company

Many years ago, Ted Collins devised the Panama Rope Trick. With this trick he won the cup for the best rope trick of the I.B.M. Convention at Fort Worth. A length of rope, that can be borrowed, is cut not one but three times and the four pieces tied together. Rope is now handed to a spectator and is completely restored. The routine is fully explained with a novel presentation by Ken de Courcy.

Now for two wonderful little-known variations. 'The Legs Of Man' by Vivian St. John. The idea is that a piece of rope is shown and tied so that it forms two circles. It is then cut in two places, then pulled through...

Borrowed Bill in Balloon by Supreme-Magic-Company

Five reputation maker routines. This is one of the cleverest effects we have seen and capable of being used in many different ways. As a note in balloon. As a smashing prediction. As a clever and colourful "Just Chance" routine with three balloons, etc.

You'll thrill to the simplicity of the method. And the cunning of it. Listen to the details of the first effect ... and the others are equally convincing, equally baffling.

Note in Balloon. An inflated balloon is shown and placed to one side. A dollar bill of any value you prefer is borrowed from a member of the audience who himself notes...
