NumismaticsThe word is derived from the Greek nomisma, "legal currency". Numismatic is the scientific study of money, coins and coin-like objects. Although money and the value of coins was understood even in antiquity, the systematic and scientific study of coins as its own discipline began only in the late eighteenth century. It was the Austrian priest Joseph Hilarius Eckhel who with his work Doctrina Numorum Veterum (Vienna, 1793-1799) wrote the first systematic work on coins. It is an 8 volume work on all of ancient Greek and Roman coinage. |
