Gunnar Gjengset

A Norwegian merited author and a scholar (PhD in science of literature), with a daily column of aphorisms in major Norwegian newspapers during the last 25 years - which makes me the most frequently read contemporary Norwegian author. I am a biographer of world famous sculptor Guatav Vigeland. In the winter of 1970 I achieved global interest, demonstrating against the suppressive Breshniev regime in USSR. After having distributed leaflets calling for the release of author Galanskov and general Grigorenko, I was imprisoned in former Leningrad, prosecuted and sentenced to one year in a prison camp. I did some time in a criminal asylum. Years after this I suffered from a post traumatic stress syndrome, took up drinking and very nearly lost it all: Family, work, career. But I quit. And in my book I'm questioning the regime of AA and the Minnesota Model, claiming that drunkards having sobered up, need to stay sober for the rest of their lives. Which is not true. My book is revealing why it is wrong, why powerful people thrive from keeping up this disruptive myth, and how you can conquer your vice by staying sober for one entire and unabbreviated year - and thereafter you can drink whatever you cherish. I did - then I passed my PhD, took up book writing, and worked as a professor. I am a success! And every now and then I share a pint or three with my good friends - or share a bottle of wine with my wife.
