Magic with a Marked Deck by Sam Dalal

From the introduction:

Most magicians have at some time or the other resorted to faked or trick decks to bring about some miracle or the other. And yet these same performers, who will pull out a Stripper or a Svengali deck at the drop of a pin shy away from a marked deck, presumably under the impression that everybody knows a Marked Deck.

That is, of course, a ridiculous notion. The truth of the matter is that not one spectator in a thousand can detect a good marked deck, and most of them are unaware of their very existence. For that matter, a number of demonstrations in our studios have...

Wild Card Variations by Sam Dalal

The Wild Card effect has been one of my favorite packet effects from as far back as I can remember and is indisputably one of the best card packet effects of all time. Unfortunately, in its original form, it does not meet my concept of good magic. It does not answer the basic audience dilemma - "Why does he do it ?"

I know transformations (anything that changes) are part of a magic effect, but there ought to be some reason for it. If a performer changes blank paper to currency notes, that's logical, it's something everyone in the audience would like to do. If he changes a silk to an egg,...

Sam Dalal
Card Tricks for Audiences That Don't Like Cards by Sam Dalal

If you think packet card effects are "hot", but some of your audience don't, you should read this book. Many very good packet card effects do not find favor with some audiences. Kids don't understand playing cards. Teenagers of the fairer sex just don't "dig" card tricks (or most magic tricks for that matter). Many ladies will hide a polite yawn. As will some gentlemen when preoccupied with more "spiritual" pastimes.

But a slight twist in the tale could change their perception. And this is what this manuscript aims at. Here are your (and my) favorite packet tricks, "dressed to please"....

Sandeep
Box'ing by Sandeep

Box'ing is a principle that allows us to reveal a spectator's selection using a card box.

Effect:

You show an empty card box and a deck of cards and hand them both to a spectator. They select a card and bury it back into the deck. Now you say that you are going to find their card using the card box. You then take the box and shake it. They hear nothing. Now you slowly tap the box on the deck and gradually a rattling sound is heard from silence which suggests that something appeared inside. Now they open the box and find a corner of a card there. Now the spectator removes their selected...

Satish B
Four Brides for Four Brothers by Satish B

This is a cheeky trick to perform when there is a request for "one more". The magician starts by telling a story. The spectator gets involved in the action and turns "matchmaker". This trick is free of any sleights. The spectator invariably cuts to the four queens in an impossible way.

The performer removes the four Kings openly and lays them face down next to each other. The deck is shuffled and a card is dealt face down in front of each King. The performer continues to deal cards into four piles. When the spectator stops him, the performer places the face up King on the pile stopped at...

Satish B
Factory Seconds by Satish B

This is a fun card trick with multiple climaxes. It starts off as a 4-Ace production trick, then it goes wrong as 4 random cards are produced instead of the 4 Aces. Next, these random cards are shown to be predicted on the magician's Facebook page. Not to be outdone, the magician also produces the mates of the 4 random cards. At last, the magician produces the 4 Aces. Of course, the best part is that the deck is face-down almost the entire time and it is handled by the spectator.

Satish B
Decepticon Aces by Satish B

The ace assembly effect is a plot that has been done to death in the annals of card magic. The following is my version of an ace assembly effect with a twist at the end. The method is so simple that even a beginner can master and perform it.

Four aces are dealt face down next to each other. Three indifferent cards are added to each pile. The magician says that he will attempt to move all the aces from the different piles into one pile. After some mumbo jumbo, the aces have disappeared from three of the piles. When the fourth pile is turned over, to everyone's surprise, it contains ... the...

Satish B
Sandwich Mr. Daley? by Satish B

The four aces are openly removed and tossed onto the table. A card is chosen by the spectator and lost in the deck. The spectator chooses either the red or black aces to proceed. Let us assume he chose the red aces. The magician proclaims that as he waves the red aces over the deck, the chosen card will appear sandwiched between the aces. After a couple of attempts, nothing happens. Then the red aces turn into two jokers. When the deck is spread, the red aces are found reversed with the chosen card sandwiched between them. As a parting shot, the chosen card is found to be predicted on the back...

Satish B
Girl Power by Satish B

This is a woman empowered card trick. The spectator (preferably a woman) randomly selects a group of cards from the middle of the deck and deals them into four face-down piles. The top card of each pile is turned over to reveal the four Kings. Suddenly she finds the matching Queens. Sounds familiar, right? But this routine goes one further. When all the cards under the Queens are spread, they are of matching suits. This trick is free of any sleights.

Satish B
Couples CAAN by Satish B

ACAAN (Any card at any number) is regarded as the holy grail of card magic. Every magician out there has a version or two of his own. Couples CAAN is my addition to the plethora of work already existing on the subject. This trick is best done for a couple on any special occasion such as their anniversary or birthday. John chooses a card from the deck and Nancy thinks of a number. The chosen card is shuffled back into the deck and lost. The cards are dealt one by one. John’s chosen card is found at the number Nancy is thinking of. The magician congratulates the couple on being well connected. ...

Satish B
Conduction Simplified by Satish B

This is an entertaining, commercial trick bearing a mystery card plot, with the spectator playing the magician and a color-changing finale that packs a wallop.

The spectator shuffles and selects a card from a blue deck under test conditions. This is the prediction. The magician shuffles the red deck, chooses a card, and signs it. The signed card miraculously matches the prediction. As a kicker finish, the magician causes the signature to jump from the red card to the blue card.

Sayan G.
S.G. Spread Control by Sayan G.

A utility move that allows you to control a card to the top, to the second, or a few cards down from the top.

I have created this move back in 2010 to control a card to the top of the deck. Over the years I have refined it to this point, now I am confident enough to share it with the magic community. With this move, you can not only control a card to the top but also to the second position or a few cards down from the top. This move is easy to perform without any knuckle-busting exercises.

Scott Baird
The Twelve Card Problem by Scott Baird

After explaining his effect 3H in his ebook More Plots and Methods (2021, p.25), Michal Kociołek writes:

Here's a little dare. I invite you, the reader, to solve this little card "problem": Perform this trick, but just with twelve cards. Once you have a method, please reach out to me as I'm very curious about your approach (unless you're reading this in 2077, then I'm definitely dead so don't bother).

This ebook contains my solutions to his challenge. The routines range from impromptu to stacked, though the majority of the effects can be done with a borrowed deck of cards and no preparation. Those...

Forces, Peeks, Stacks and Gaffs by Scott Creasey

Should a Mentalist use playing cards?

Good question and one which has been raging among Mentalists since Annemann was still going strong. In this book Scott has addressed that question and put together some of his favourite Mentalism card routines, covering effects with borrowed decks, stacked decks and gaffed decks.

You'll find no knuckle busting sleight of hand here; instead Scott has included some of his own routines taken straight from his professional mentalism repertoire, many of which no other magicians have seen until now. Some of the ideas are based on old effects given a new twist, but...

Scott F. Guinn
Great Scott's Ambitious Card Routine by Scott F. Guinn

The Ambitious Card is visual, impossible, and engaging. It breaks the old "never repeat a trick" rule - in fact, it becomes stronger when repeated, especially as the conditions become more stringent along the way.

This ebook teaches Scott's Ambitious Card routine (no surprise there, eh?). He explains not only what he does, but why he does it--why each phase goes where it does, etc.

A lot of you will be adding the finale to your own routines; it's free, quickly constructed, easy to use, and it creates the same illusion as some pretty expensive marketed gaffs. It is also much cleaner and...

Clairvoyant Joker 2.0.1.0 by Scott F. Guinn

Scott has been using this diabolically simple routine for over twenty years. How can something so easy play so strongly?

Effect: You deal five cards to the table. A spectator mentally chooses a number from one to five. You turn your back, and he looks at the card that fell at his number, then replaces it. The cards are gathered and shuffled and placed in your shirt pocket. After a few moments of focused concentration, you remove the cards one at a time. Finally, you reveal the card that the spectator merely thought of, proving you also knew his number! But you're not done yet... The rest...
