The Davenport Brothers caused a sensation in the last century by seeming to contact spirits. Leaving messages on blank slates was a common method of achieving this. The Bicycle Word Test is a think-of-a-word effect that uses common props used among magicians and mentalists. The spectator is asked to think of a word using this prop and the mentalist is able to divine the word successfully.

The participant then makes a series of choices and moves between objects while the mentalist eliminates different objects along the way with their help. Six poker chips, bearing the numbers 0 to ten are examined and mixed by a spectator. The spectator lays them on a table with no interference from the mentalist. While the performer's back is turned, the spectator turns over some chips. Three more are turned over and covered with a playing card, business card, or beer coaster.
