A spectator selects a page of classified ads from among several in the newspaper and perhaps a hundred individual ads are cut out. Half a dozen spectators assist by folding the ads in half and placing them on a tray or table. From among the ads, thirteen are selected at random (a true free choice) and each is inserted into a standard drug or coin envelope and sealed. Effect 1: A Fortunate Ending

An audience member is asked to come up and participate in a demonstration of fortune and possibility. A deck of cards is introduced, displayed, shown to be all different and shuffled by the audience member. He/She is asked to then begin to deal cards into rows and at any moment deal one card forward, a specially chosen card. Then continue dealing until he/she feels compelled to stop.

When the audience member stops the chosen card is revealed (for example the 7 of Diamonds). A small envelope is handed out to the audience member, it is opened and a small hand...

What Happens:

The mentalist displays four or five current popular magazines. They are handed out and freely examined. One is chosen by an audience member and he or she is asked to peruse the magazine. Next they are asked to decide on a page with lots of text, they do so and proceed to remove the page from the magazine. This is repeated with the other magazines until there are four or five random pages from each magazine.

Next the audience member's with their respective pages are instructed to turn them landscape and tear them in half. Place the two pieces together and repeat, and repeat...

On the table are 6 cards and a set of cards in a card box. The spectator calls a number from one to six. The magician counts to the associated card and points with the finger to the card. Let's say the spectator chooses the number five and chooses with that the 4 of diamonds. No force required, the spectator has a FREE choice (like the effect name).

Now you open the card box (which was lying on the table) and all cards are blank (or white whatever you want to call them) except for one, the card the spectator chose. The blank cards can be properly investigated by the spectator.

A spectator is asked to throw three fair dice (this is an absolute fair throw or even just a mental throw - no force here). From the number fairly thrown you construct a perfect magic square. For a kicker, the cards are put together and the face of a King of Hearts appears.

There is no palming of cards or exchanging of decks or anything like it. You work with 16 cards and 16 cards only without any sleight-of-hand.

This is a system to easily remember one or two cards, say two key cards, and not forget them during the performance of your routine. It is not an associative memory system.

Some card routines, particularly the recently published ones in Sunken Treasury by Nick Conticello require one to remember two key cards. In the heat of performing such an effect these can be forgotten, rendering the trick a failure. This system allows you to easily keep track of one or two or more cards that you want to remember.

A spectator populates a row of a 4x4 square with any four numbers. You fill out the remaining 12 squares in seconds to construct a magic square. Does not require any math.

This has become my favorite impromptu magic square effect, because it is easier than a classic magic square - there is literally no math, unless you consider counting up or down by one math - and it produces a stronger effect with spectators. Thus a win-win all around.
