Norman H. Murdoch

Norman H. Murdoch, B.A., M.Div., M.Th., M.A., Ph.D., is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. Born in DuBois, Pennsylvania to Salvation Army officer parents in 1939, he was educated at Asbury College, Asbury Theological Seminary and the University of Cincinnati. He joined the faculty of the University of Cincinnati in 1968, first as an instructor in history, psychology and sociology, then solely in history after 1972 with his appointment as an Assistant Professor. Made Associate Professor in 1986 and Professor of American History in 1992, he was appointed Emeritus Professor upon his retirement in 2005.

He has published A Centennial History of The Salvation Army in Cincinnati (1985), Origins of The Salvation Army (1994), Frank Smith, Salvation Socialist (2003), Soldiers of the Cross: Susie Swift and David Lamb (2006) and Christian Warfare in Rhodesia-Zimbabwe: The Salvation Army and African Liberation 1891-1991 (2015). He also wrote booklets and made a videotaped debate on the 1787 U.S. Constitution. Five of his essays have been published in books, 13 in scholarly journals, 11 as encyclopaedia entries. He has prepared 59 book reviews for history journals and popular publications, and written articles for popular magazines. In 1990 he was managing editor of “William and Catherine Booth”, published by Christian History magazine. He has given and/or critiqued papers on 44 occasions. With 22 research grants he has made 16 trips to study The Salvation Army in Canada, Britain, Switzerland, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Chile, Australia and New Zealand.

He has also been a member of the Milford, Ohio, Board of Education (1976-83) and chief negotiator (1989) and president of the University of Cincinnati chapter of the American Association of University Professors (1989-95), during which time he was also a member of the AAUP’s National Council.
