Stuart Schaar

Studied history at City College of New York, then received his PhD in Western European History and Middle East Studies from Princeton University. Received a 2 1/2 year Ford Foundation grant for his dissertation research in France and Morocco. He then taught in the Tropical History Program at The University of Wisconsin Madison) starting in 1964), worked as a Faculty Associate for the American University Field Staff and wrote articles for them from North and East Africa and the Middle East. He then lectured at 10 universities in the United States for the Field Staff before becoming Associate Professor of Middle East and North African and Global History at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York where he taught until retirement in 2007. He has since lived in Tunisia and Morocco until the present time. His books include three co-authored collections: The Middle East and Islamic World Reader for the twenty first Century (New York: Grove Press,3rd ed. 2012); The Birth of the Arab Citizen and the Changing Middle East (Northampton, MA: Olive Branch Press for Interlink Publishers, 2015); Subversives and Mavericksin the Muslim Mediterranean: A Sub Altern History (University of Texas Press, Forthcoming December,2016). His biography Eqbal Ahmad: Critical Outsider in a Turbulent Age was published in 2015 by NY's Columbia University Press. It was longlisted for the best biography of 2015 by US PEN. He has published many articles and has contributed op-eds to the New York Times and The Christian Science Monitor. He is the recipient of 5 MacArthur grants to organize conferences around the Algerian Civil War and produce a film with the Algerian award-winning film director, Merzac Alwash, which was shown on Arte television.
