I am 57 years old - and very unconventionally ugly. I absolutely dislike the tendency nowadays towards mere image at the expense of reality. And, in my fiction, which is difficult and controversial, I feel the need is for rawness, even when this is ultra-uncomfortable. I am not trying to reassure the reader - instead, I seek confrontation. The author should not be an elegant aristocrat, who sneers rather than communicates, but someone in stained overalls with a spanner and a drill, toiling amidst all the debris and rubble of human emotion. The results are not always refined and gentle. Honesty can be dirty, not easy. We must upset, anger, provoke the world- or we are not writers.
