ACAAN

The 'Any Card At Any Number' plot is one of the most fascinating plots in card magic. Sometimes it is referred to as 'The Berglas Effect', because David Berglas was the one who popularized it, and who is probably this effect's most skilled performer.

The basic effect goes like this. Have a spectator choose any number from 1-52 (the number of cards in a regular deck). Let's assume the spectator chooses 16. Then have him or her select any card. Say the spectator chooses the Three-of-Hearts. Now the spectator counts to the 16th card in the deck and finds the Three-of-Hearts there. Impossible! But that is the effect. How you can achieve this and similar effects you will learn from the products in this category.

ACAAN of Worms

Tom Phoenix

ACAAN of Worms by Tom PhoenixThis is a collection of 10 ACAAN and plot variation methods. It covers subconscious predictions, Si work, and other such shenanigans.

Here is a list of the contents:

Predestination - A deck is shuffled by the spectator, and a card is thought of. The participant deals cards until they find the one they thought of. You have predicted the exact position it was found in. No forces involved, and nothing is said out-loud by the participant. Oh, and you can perform this blindfolded.

True ACAAN - No stooges, forces, trick decks, etc. It requires work, but it's not hard to do, and is entirely...

DIYCAAN

Raphaël Czaja

DIYCAAN by Raphaël CzajaFrom the creator of SCAMP, ACOCAVAN and 2D-ACAIN comes a fresh, original and effortless take on the Any Card At Any Number plot. It uses ordinary cards and can be performed hands-off (anyone can deal the cards at the end instead of the magician). Best of all, an impromptu version is also explained.

The magician introduces his performance by claiming: "The secret for this effect to be a success is for you to be both instinctive and lucky. I will guide you but just keep in mind that one card more or one card less will make all the difference."

The spectator cuts off the deck and silently counts his cards to...

Simple Sleightless ACAAN

Abhinav Bothra

Simple Sleightless ACAAN by Abhinav BothraOne of the simplest methods to perform the holy grail of card magic - Any Card At Any Number (ACAAN) with a regular pack of playing cards without any sleights.

This is what happens: You introduce 3 cards with 3 simple questions:

  • Q1. Name a number
  • Q2. Name a suit
  • Q3. Name a value
That get answered alternatively by the participant and the performer. You unbox the deck of cards and demonstrate to the participant to deal down the cards to their number, the participant does the same and it is his/her named card at the named number.

Features:

  • no forces
  • no pre-show
  • no dual reality ...

Deckless ACAAN

Unknown Mentalist

Deckless ACAAN by Unknown MentalistA collection of 16 stunning routines based on the ACAAN theme.

The best part is that several of these routines do not use a physical deck at all. Some of these routines do use a physical deck but the performer never touches the deck at all. The deck is merely used to verify at the end whether the chosen card is at the chosen number. The main method is an old beauty but has never been used in this manner.

There are no psychological forces, no dual reality, no swami, no sleights, of course, no stooges or instant stooges, no preshow, no math, no memory and no stack. Unlike any other ACAAN,...

Abhinav Bothra

DYAD by Abhinav BothraA deceiving card control + an intrepid card move = An audacious card at any number

AMBIENCE CONTROL : A single card control from the middle of the deck to the top. Originally put out in The Blind Faith Collection (2015). It can also be used as a phase in an Ambitious Card Routine.

Notes and Credits: Do not confuse Ambience Control to be same as Bizau Christian's Blind Square. They both are different. Say Stop was inspired from Paul Wilson's Yamfacaan. However...

ACAAN'Z

Gerard Zitta

ACAAN'Z by Gerard ZittaTons of ideas in this manual...A compendium of effects, principles and methods related somehow to the "Any card at any number" plot, commonly called ACAAN. Even though they are not all 'perfect' ACAAN's, they are interesting, entertaining or original variants from an audience point of view.
  • Some are original, some are based on combinations of old principles, with some 'twists' or new ideas.
  • Most are card tricks, some are not.
  • Some are impromptu or even improvised, some need some preparation.
  • Some are hands off, some need some (easy) sleight of hand.
  • Some are direct, some are more convoluted. ...

ACAAN Accomplished

Timothy Wade

ACAAN Accomplished by Timothy WadeAfter fanning the cards to show they are mixed the performer places the deck on a small table or hands it to someone to hold, at which point he never touches or even approaches the deck again. Next, the performer, in order to prove no stooges are being used picks up a box that is filled with paper balls and slings it in an arc over the entire audience asking everyone to catch or pick up a ball near them. When a number of the audience are holding paper balls, the performer reveals that three of the balls have a second red paper ball concealed inside the white. When the three people find...

TOCATON

Nick Conticello

TOCATON by Nick ConticelloWhat is TOCATON?

TOCATON, the word, is an acronym for "thought-of card at thought-of number." It's pronounced "talk-a-ton." The word was coined by Nick Conticello to describe his new approach to the classic David Berglas effect "Any Card at Any Number." Nick feels the word is more descriptive of his effects because he does limit the choice of numbers and the choice of cards. But his approach has the virtues of speed of presentation and lack of preparation. Like most of his published work, TOCATON can be performed impromptu, with any reasonably complete pack of cards.

TOCATON, the e-book, contains four...

The ACAAN Experience

Nick Conticello

The ACAAN Experience by Nick ConticelloAuthor and collector Doug Edwards after seeing a performance said:
"That's the best impromptu ACAAN effect I've ever seen!"
If you have ever wanted to do an impromptu version of the David Berglas classic ACAAN but despaired of finding a workable method, rejoice! In his new ebook The ACAAN Experience Nick Conticello offers you four impromptu methods.

Each version of Nick's effect CAAN-Fluence starts from a single premise but uses a different technique each time to place a freely chosen card at a freely chosen location in a borrowed, shuffled, incomplete deck. None of these versions require any sleight-of-hand...

The Untouchables

David Devlin

The Untouchables by David DevlinThis is a new Any Card at Any Number effect in which (apparently) the spectator does all of the work, and it happens all in his hands. Not only that, but the performer has predicted the entire outcome; the card and the number, far in advance! This is all true. The performer never touches the deck once the effect begins.

Here is the effect as the audience sees it: The deck is shuffled by a spectator. The performer has any spectator think of any number between one and fifty-two, but not to reveal it to anyone until asked by the performer. Nothing is written down. The number is simply thought...

The Catch-All Principle

Nick Conticello

The Catch-All Principle by Nick Conticello[Note: If you purchase this together with Sunken Treasury: Part 1 and 2 and Sunken Treasury: Part 3, 4 and 5 you will get The Catch-All Principle for free. Discount is automatically applied in the shopping cart. Also applies if you have purchased the entire Sunken Treasury in the past.

The Catch-All Principle allows you to covertly position a free selection at a predetermined position in the deck. It does this with the help of two key cards. The real strength and novelty of this principle is that at crucial moments the spectator is free to cut the deck, which makes it seem impossible that the selection will end up at a predetermined position - but it does.

Perhaps the best use of this principle...

C.I.A: Challenging and Intensive ACAAN

Abhinav Bothra

C.I.A: Challenging and Intensive ACAAN by Abhinav BothraA really clean and impeccable ACAAN.

What the audience sees and hears:

The Performer brings out a deck of cards and points to a person asking him to think of any card but not the Ace (as its common for people to go for it) and another person to think of a number between 1 and 48. He then proceeds to pull out the Aces meanwhile handing out small packets of cards to 4 different audience members and asks them to shuffle the cards thoroughly. While they are busy shuffling, the two audience members are asked to name their thought of card and the number for the first time.

Once the shuffling...

The Holy Dixie Cup

David Devlin

The Holy Dixie Cup by David DevlinA deck is borrowed. It is thoroughly shuffled by a spectator. The performer has any spectator think of any number between one and fifty-two, but not to reveal it to anyone until asked by the performer. Nothing is written down. The number is simply thought of. The performer now has a different spectator name any card. There is no force of any kind! After a very funny gag, the performer for the first time asks the spectator to reveal the number that he has merely been thinking of. Let us assume that the number is twenty three. Without any fumbling or manipulation of the deck, no cuts, no shuffles,...

The Stained Glass Effect

The Stained Glass Effect by Simon CaineA deck is borrowed from a spectator. The deck is shuffled by the spectator. They select a card and commit it to memory. Nothing is forced, no card is mentioned out loud.

A second spectator is thinking of any number between 1 and 52, the card is replaced and the deck is further mixed. Nothing is forced, no number is mentioned out loud.

Only after both spectators are satisfied with the random state of the deck are the freely chosen card and number named out loud (only if they want! This information can stay unknown to the performer the whole time.)

The performer does not touch the deck,...

ACAAN

Brian Kennedy

ACAAN by Brian KennedyThis is a straight forward ACAAN that is very easy to do - one could say it is more or less a move-less method. You ask the spectator to name any card (no force, completely free choice). Then you ask them to cut a portion of the cards off the deck and count the cards. This is the free selection for a number. Again there is no force of any kind. The spectator can cut as little or as many cards as she wishes. Nevertheless, the card the spectator has chosen earlier ends up at the same number.

[Note: The method is deceptively simple. It will probably not fool most magicians, but it will fool the vast majority of laypeople. The advantage of this method is that it requires no preparation and no forcing of any kind.]

The ACAAN Finale

Tommaso Guglielmi

The ACAAN Finale by Tommaso GuglielmiAfter many versions of ACAAN, Tommy has created a version which he believes is very direct, hands–off and very close to the perfect ACAAN. From the spectator's view point, they will see:
  • A deck of cards closed in its box is in full view on the table.
  • A spectator selects a card using an imaginary deck and a number via an imaginary urn.
  • Mentally the spectator imagines moving the card to the correct position inside the deck.
  • The spectator removes the cards from the box and counts to named number and the named card will be there without the magician ever touching the deck
In all his...
