William H. Radcliffe

(1873 - ?)

William Hiram Radcliffe lived on the Isle of Man. He was the second earliest discoverer of the only possible magic hexagon. He did that in 1895 and patented it in 1896 - entered at Stationers Hall. (The first known discoverer of the magic hexagon was the German Ernst von Haselberg in 1887.)

He wrote a series of magic articles in The American Boy starting with the March 1908 issue, and the book Magic for Amateurs (1910, 1924). Contributions to Magic is Fun.

I couldn't find out much about the author, but it appears that he worked professionally in telephony, thus perhaps also his contribution of a telephone trick in Magic is Fun issue 2. He was the second earliest discoverer of the only magic hexagon in 1895, which he patented in 1896, and was long thought to be the first until new records showed that the German Ernst von Haselberg discovered it in 1887.
