James C. Wobensmith

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: 9th February 1879 - 28th December 1973)

Started out designing machines. Enlisted in the Engineers Corps in Porto Rico for the Spanish-American war. Later studied law. Lawyer (since 1919) in Philadelphia, specialized in patent, trademark, and copyright law. Pennsylvania politician. Mason. Amateur magician since 1908 through doing patent work for Howard Thurston. Invented Muslin Band Trick (marketed by Brema in 1922), etc. Founding President in 1920 of the SAM Philadelphia Assembly. Wrote Magic Patents, a Classified List of United States Patents Relating to Magic, Illusions and Allied Subjects (1928). SAM President 1930-31. 1972 SAM Hall of Fame.

Finding patents related to magic is not so easy. Wobensmith wrote in the preface in 1928: "The Patent Office classification, while to some extent helpful, is by no means a satisfactory guide for the use of the magician in searching for available material, or for knowledge as to what has or has not been patented.
