Jay Jennings

Jay's "day job" is a software engineer in the Southwest US. He grew up in Alaska, lived on a commune, dropped out of school, graduated from Ringling Bros Clown College, worked as a radio DJ, fell in love at a juggling club meeting, adopted siblings, and wrote computer games and books.

Jay has been performing and creating magic and mentalism longer than he’s willing to admit. His style blends real-world practicality with a touch of theatrical flair—and the occasional questionable life choice turned into a performance piece. He’s not claiming to know everything (far from it), but he’s figured out a few things that work and decided to share them in case they help another mystery performer out there. If his effects make your audiences gasp, laugh, or just stop scrolling for a second, then he’ll call that a win.

Mind on the Rocks by Jay Jennings

The mentalist shows cards representing five drinking establishments and their signature drink, such as Martini or Old Fashioned. The cards are placed face up on a table on stage. The mentalist now invites three random spectators to join him on stage and explains they will play the parts of folks embarking on an imaginary pub crawl.

Because nobody knows how wild this night is going to get, each participant will select a fake ID under which they'll do their drinking. Three cards are shown, each bearing a different humorous name, and mixed face down and given to the participants. The mentalist...

Cut the Cheese! by Jay Jennings

Admittedly on the crude side, but a magic effect that doesn't stoop as low as the Magic Ding Dong - this one you can show your Mom.

The effect: The magician shows the back of a shopping list and explains on the other side is everything the volunteer needs to make a special spaghetti dinner for their guests tonight. Unfortunately, the volunteer has forgotten one thing on the list and the magician puts a card face down on the table, saying that's his prediction for what will go wrong with the dinner.

Handing the volunteer a pair of scissors, the magician has them choose a line on the back...

Layne's Nightmare: a fish story by Jay Jennings

A close-up routine for the people in your audience who'd rather be fishing.

(Psst! I don't want to say this is self-working, but...)

The effect: Sixteen fish cards are dealt face down in a 4x4 grid, and your helper is asked to choose a number from 1 to 4 so you can eliminate that fishing spot. Remove all the cards from the chosen column and row, and show a few of the faces to display what trophy fish were not caught.

Ask them to eliminate another fishing spot by choosing from the rows/columns that are left and remove those cards, again showing some of the world-class fish that weren't...

NuMatrix Cards by Jay Jennings

Ever thought about getting into readings but didn't know how to get started? This is a great way to get your feet wet - NuMatrix Cards is low pressure and has a surprise ending.

The Effect: The mentalist shows nine large cards, each with a different grid of 16 numbers, and allows the participant to choose the one that appeals to her at that moment.

Setting the other eight grid cards aside, the mentalist writes something on the back of the extra Lo Shu card and places it aside for later. Handing the dry-erase marker to the spectator, he asks her to circle a number on the grid. He then...

Coincidence at Play by Jay Jennings

A fun close-up or parlor magic routine (with a mentalism flavor and an "OMG!" ending) that revolves around the game of chess.

The Effect: The performer shows six square cards, each with the image of a chess board setup. On each card, a different piece is missing - a pawn on one, a rook on another, etc. He then shows the backs of those cards, and each is numbered from 1 to 6. Those cards are laid aside for now.

A deck of cards is introduced, and instead of playing cards on the faces, there are pictures of chess pieces, one piece on each card. A spectator is asked to pull a card from the...
