Although a political journalist with only a layman's knowledge of magical methods, he wrote the first history of magicians, The Lives of the Conjurors (London: 1876, 360pp; reprinted 1881, 353pp; facsimile repr of 1st ed 1971), a classic. Also wrote The Old Showmen and the Old London Fairs (London: 1874, 388pp; repr 1875 and 1881) and Circus Life and Circus Celebrities (1875, 328pp).
