Alex De Vega
(Glasgow, Scotland: 10th September 1891 - 9th January 1971)
Stage name of Alexander Mackay "Alex" Stewart. Initially pro illusionist with full-evening show that toured Britain for several years. Then physiotherapist. Also pyrotechnist with "Stewart's Displays", continuing as illusionist on semi-pro basis. In 1922 was hired by Houdini to investigate the "Crewe Circle" of pseudo-psychics. First President of Scottish Conjurers' Association 1924. Invented the Divided Lady illusion ("The Great Divide") by 1945.
Wrote A Whirlwind of Wizardry (1919, with Chris van Bern) and Summertime Sorcery (1939, 17pp). Also wrote 13 manuscripts (1926-48), including Formula X (1947) and The Devil's Whisper (1948).
