
Carl Willmann
(Waren, Mecklenburg, Germany: 4th May 1849 [or 1848] - 12th February 1934)
Watchmaker in Waren then Hamburg. Amateur magician. Pro magic dealer in Hamburg since November 1874. Co-invented (with Theo Bamberg) fall-apart box (by 1908). Partner with Janós Bartl 1919-1924 as "Vereinigte zauberapparate Fabrik Bartl and Willmann". In 1926 absorbed E. Chambly's local prop-making shop. Died in Hamburg. Father of John Willmann who inherited the business.
Edited the first German-language magic magazine, Die Zauberwelt, 1895-1904. Wrote six books in German: Moderne Wunder (1886, 240pp; 3rd ed 1897, 320pp), Die moderne Salon-Magie (1891, 460pp; new ed 1926, 555pp), Der Gedächtniskünstler als Hellseher (1891, 85pp), Illustrierte magische Bibliothek (6 vols, 1900, 552pp total), Telepatische Unterrichtsbriefe [c1920, 51pp], and Das Programm eines modernen Zauberkünstlers [c1920, 152pp].
