The Colley-cted Index is the collected and combined version of all the indices to magic magazines which Michael Colley has prepared, so far 19 magazines.
Sometimes it is easier to look up an item or name in an index than to search for it. It might be an item that can't be easily searched for, such as photos, or it might be an item you don't have good search terms or phrases for, or perhaps the search returns so many results that it is too time-consuming to go through all of them to find the relevant ones.
You will receive this index in four formats:
- PDF
- Microsoft Access database
- Excel spreadsheet (.xlsx)
- CSV
At present, the Index covers over 144,244 pages. Magazines included are:

Items in these are listed by author, title, date, volume, issue, page, and up to ten categories. Each category is represented by a three letter abbreviation such as CARds (3717 entries), CHIldren (1683 entries), REViews of Books (2065 entries), DVDs etc. (259 entries), REPorts of Societies, Conventions, Shows and other events (5443 entries), BIOgraphy (1231 entries), OBItuary (2393 entries), MANipulation (117 entries), etc. There are a total of 30338 entries and 586 different categories. The categories are shown on the search screen.
The entries can be searched by any combination of author, magazine, title and category and the results can be output as a datasheet or as a report. The output contains the volume, issue and page of each item. They can be sorted in a variety of ways.
The names and pictures Index " contains 57348 name entries (from 15 of the magazines) and 35959 pictures entries. It is an index of mentions and pictures of people, even when little information is given about them. It includes names of persons in group photographs as well as on their own. Some have "types" which can be entered in the "type" and "exclude type" fields. A list of types appears when these fields are entered.
Photographs in the first 100 volumes of the Magic Circular are also listed, though there is currently no index of the articles in that publication.
The advertisements index contains 25249 entries of the advertisements in 11 of the indexed magazines. Advertisements in ABRAcadabra are currently only present for the first 40 volumes. Except in Demon Telegraph and Magigram items are only listed on their first appearance.
In the pictures and names section, there is also a listing of pseudonyms and stage names containing 3067 entries. Did you know that Peter Warlock (who was really Alec Bell) also appeared on stage and in print under at least seven other Names?
Not all the magazines have all sections. These are noted for each in the drop-down magazine selector as
C - Content (i.e. articles), A - Advertisements, N - Names, P - Pictures
The ABRAindex section is currently under review. As the first magazine which I indexed (the first section over 40 years ago) the category classifications were frequently less detailed. Up to four categories were possible with each entry and items would often just be CARds, while now an item may also contain TRAnsposition, ENVelope and FIRe, and up to a total of 10 categories. I am also adding Editorials and News Items, which were not included in the original indexing.
