The Tops by Dustin Marks

Effect: A letter card, which appears to be a mistake, is placed on the table without explanation. The spectator sees 32 different lettered cards. The cards are shuffled. The spectator freely selects four cards and arranges them to form a word. The mistake card is turned over - it matches the spectator's word!

A "mistake" that turns into a miracle!

Imagine placing a single card on the table - a card that appears to be nothing more than a scribbled mistake. You then introduce a deck of 32 lettered cards. Your spectator sees that the cards are all different and is even allowed to shuffle them.

The spectator freely selects four cards and arranges them to form a word. Only then do you draw attention back to that "mistake" card sitting in plain sight. When it's turned over, it perfectly predicts the word they just created.

Why The Tops" belongs in your repertoire:

  • In Plain Sight: The prediction is on the table before the effect even begins. What the spectator dismisses as a mistake becomes a mind-blowing revelation.
  • Total Perceived Freedom: Your spectator shuffles their own packet and points to the cards they want. The "Target Card" force is so subtle they'll never see it coming.
  • Easy to Prepare: All you need is a Sharpie and a blank-face Bicycle deck. The setup is simple, using a clever "Index CSC" (Corner Short Card) to keep you in control at all times.
  • The Ultimate Personalization: Take this from a strong effect to a miracle level by using the spectator's own 4-letter name (like MARK, JACK, or KATE etc).
Bonus: If the spectator has a four-letter name, you can have him spell his own name! This is very powerful and personal, making this one of the best effects where a spectator spells their name. It is totally unexpected, and you do not have to carry two decks.

This is the effect you want to do to blow your spectator away if they have a four-letter name.

  • Easy to do
  • A surprise reveal and prediction
  • One time setup
  • No math
  • No switches
  • No apps
  • No electronics
